Essential oils (EOs) are complex mixtures of volatile compounds, primarily terpenoids and phenolic constituents, derived from plants. They have been widely studied for their diverse biological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory effects, among others. These bioactivities attributed to the unique chemical composition EOs, which enables multi-targeted modes action such as disruption microbial cell membranes, inhibition spore germination, modulation inflammatory pathways. Their potential alternatives conventional antimicrobial therapies has gained attention, particularly in addressing resistance. Additionally, EOs exhibit significant antioxidant properties, contributing food preservation by preventing spoilage extending shelf life. In agriculture, roles pest management plant growth regulation highlight sustainable applications. conclusion, present a promising avenue applications healthcare, preservation, though further research is necessary overcome challenges related variability clinical validation.

The research explored the chemical characteristics of essential oils (EOs) extracted from peels four citrus fruits grown in northeastern Peru (lime, sweet lemon, mandarin and orange). were by hydrodistillation using a green solvent, subsequently, their physicochemical profile, bioactive, heat capacity, RAMAN mapping determined; addition, volatile composition was determined gas chromatography (GC-MS), main phenols liquid (UHPLC). results evidenced that lemon had higher antioxidant activity (1592.38 1216.13 μmol TE/g) total phenolic content (680.78 420.28 mg GAE/g). In contrast, peel oil highest flavonoid (23.18 QE/g). D-limonene most abundant aromatic compound orange (>67 %), (>70 (>72 %) EOs; however, lime, it lowest (37 %). component cyclobutane, 1,2-bis(1-methylethylethylenyl)-, trans- (32

Abstract The postharvest end-quality of citrus is significantly impacted by pre-harvest factors such as weather, which varies among growing regions. Despite the importance these factors, influence regional weather variations, variations in temperature, humidity, wind, vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and solar radiation on quality, largely unknown. This study aims to quantify this impact through a physics-driven digital replica entire value chain Valencia oranges, from orchards South Africa retail Europe. Predicted fruit properties data at harvest hygrothermal sensor orchard for different production regions are coupled physics-based model simulate key quality metrics. These metrics include mass loss, chilling injury, index (FQI), remaining shelf life (RSL), total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA). Our reveals that variability affects evolution when comparing Nelspruit, Letsitele, Sunday’s River Valley (SRV). most pronounced temperate oceanic climate SRV compared hotter climates Letsitele Nelspruit. findings indicate differences conditions between FQI, RSL, TSS, TA oranges retail. up 10% variation loss 4% 1% grown We show temperature humidity local transport increase twofold, FQI ~ 12%, RSL 15% research also shows important metric during growth affecting various aspects orange quality. offers valuable insights into available consumers. could help industry enhance practices, logistics, marketing, cold strategies, thereby improving product consumer satisfaction.
