This Review covers the recent developments (2005–2015) in design, synthesis, characterization, and application of thermotropic ionic liquid crystals. It was designed to give a comprehensive overview "state-of-the-art" field. The discussion is focused on low molar mass dendrimeric mesogens, as well selected metal-containing compounds (metallomesogens), but some references polymeric and/or lyotropic crystals particularly liquids will also be provided. Although zwitterionic mesoionic mesogens are treated extent, emphasis directed toward liquid-crystalline materials consisting organic cations organic/inorganic anions that not covalently bound interact via electrostatic other noncovalent interactions.

A series of novel star-shaped ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) compounds with various counterions (derived from HBF4, HPF6, CF3COOH, d-MH-SO3H, H3PO4, p-Toluenesulfonic acid) were designed and synthesised starting precursors pyridines crystalline monomer cholesteryl 4-bromobutanoate. Inducing by use self-assembly due to electrostatic attraction ion clusters was one the most essential factors for intermolecular separation. ILCs showed a smectic (SmA) mesophase. d-spacing increased slightly increase volume anion. clearing temperatures pyridinium salts suggested that effect stabilisation on SmA structures in order H2PO4−>BF4−>TS−>D-MH-SO3−>CF3COO−>PF6−. Liquid crystal polymer of Cholesteryl Acrylate-Indium Tin Oxide (PolyChoA-ITO) in this study has been successfully synthesized by UV curing method, which variations ITO concentrations i.e. 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50% w/w. This research using as a doping on cholesteryl acrylate monomer subsequently polymerized. Characterization PolyChoA-ITO FTIR, that resulted peak at 1600-1750 cm-1 identifies the stretching vibration C=O group. The wavelength also shows interaction with PolyCho A-ITO. X Ray Diffraction (XRD) showed some peaks 2θ = 7,53□; 15,27□; 8,10□; 30,40□; is typical acrylate. SEM image agglomerated surface uniform. Conductivity properties higher concentration added greater conductivity value. maximum value 10% 50.352 × 10-8 S/m.

In this paper, d-camphoryl chloride, terephthaloyl hydroquinone and 2,3-dibromosuccinyl chloride were used as raw materials to synthesise the main-chain liquid crystalline polymers by condensation polymerisation.
