Effective municipal solid waste (MSW) management is a critical challenge for policymakers, exacerbated by population growth and urbanization. Approximately 2 billion tonnes of MSW are generated globally each year, with 30 % uncollected 70 landfilled. In low-income countries, 90 dumped or openly burned, leading to severe environmental health impacts. This paper summarises the pros cons real-scale implementation practices addressing their advances, focusing on landfill leachate in Europe Africa. It highlights disparity between these continents, where advanced technologies stringent European regulations contrast limited resources infrastructure The emphasizes importance proper segregation at source adoption appropriate treatment tailored specific characteristics region. Through comparative analysis selected provides guide policymakers improve systems mitigate impacts leachate. advocates integration continuous public awareness programs enhance recovery reduce dependence. research underscores necessity cross-continental experience sharing development sustainable, region-specific strategies support circular economy achieve zero-waste-to-landfill goals.

Waste incineration is a crucial component of waste management as it the final stage circular utilization and initial phase disposal. Effective prioritizes energy recovery from substantial volume reduction while committing to minimizing air pollutant emissions, particularly nitrogen oxides (NOx). This study involves an in-depth analysis operational data 44 facilities in South Korea spanning 5 years, supplemented by empirical measurements 14 sites. aimed assess three key aspects these facilities: (1) characteristics, (2) capabilities, (3) NOx emission performance. We examined how elements interact within policy framework governing incinerator Korea. Quantitatively, incinerating 100 tons municipal resulted gain 338.7 m3 landfill capacity 637.5 GJ form heat or electricity. Notably, Korean significantly extend lifespan sites, aligning closely with objectives Ministry Environment’s “No More Direct Landfilling Household Policy”. positive outcome further reinforced “Incineration Tax Reduction Policy”, which incentivizes active efforts toward during incineration. Our provides decision-makers valuable insights for achieving harmonious equilibrium between environmental sustainability resource utilization, thereby contributing continuous improvement policies at Korea’s vision economy.

Leachate formation is one of the most important factors taken into account during operation and long-term management municipal waste landfills. Systematic assessment groundwater leachate contamination may be useful in selecting appropriate method or treatment processes. The use indicators to quantify potential vicinity MSW could help landfill managers assess their quality. Therefore, aim study was representativeness selected indicator methods for analyzing temporal variability properties two landfills a Central European country (Poland). pollution index (LPI), sub-LPI adjusted (r-LPI) were used quality water, while water (LWPI) results confirmed that LWPI an effective assessing obtained confirm negative impact landfills, despite insulation used. showed poor visible (landfill W, average - 2.34) moderately polluted waters minor S, 1.37).
