Abstract The extensive use of petroleum-based synthetic and non-biodegradable materials for packaging applications has caused severe environmental damage. rising demand sustainable encouraged scientists to explore abundant unconventional materials. For instance, cellulose, extracted from lignocellulosic biomass, gained attention owing its ecological biodegradable nature. This article reviews the extraction cellulose nanoparticles conventional non-conventional preparation cellulosic nanocomposites food packaging. Cellulosic exhibit exceptional mechanical, biodegradation, optical barrier properties, which are attributed nanoscale structure high specific surface area, 533 m 2 g −1 , cellulose. mechanical properties composites improve with content nanoparticles, yet an excessive amount induces agglomeration and, in turn, poor properties. Addition increases tensile by about 42%. Barrier reinforced nanoparticles; water vapor permeability decreased 28% presence 5 wt% nanoparticles. Moreover, 1 addition filler oxygen transmission rate 21%. We also discuss eco-design process, designing principles challenges.
