Abstract The Italian hare ( Lepus corsicanus ) is endemic to Central-Southern Italy and Sicily, classified as vulnerable due habitat alterations, low density fragmented populations ecological competition with the sympatric European europaeus ). Despite this status , only few local studies have explored its features. We provided some key traits of niche well potential distribution in peninsula. All data derived from genetically validated presences. generated a suitability model using maximum entropy for main competitor, hare. dietary habits were obtained DNA metabarcoding High-Throughput Sequencing on faecal pellets. most relevant environmental variables affecting are shared hare, suggesting competition. variation observed altitudinal statistically significant between two species. The diet all year around includes 344 plant taxa accounted by 62 families. Fagaceae Fabaceae Poaceae Rosaceae Solanaceae (counts > 20,000) represented 90.22% total diet. (60.70%) (67.47%) abundant items occurring Spring/Summer Autumn/Winter diets, respectively. showed richness (N = 266) diversity index values (Shannon: 2.329, Evenness: 0.03858, Equitability: 0.4169) higher than 199, Shannon: 1.818, 0.03096, 0.3435). Our contribution adds important information broaden knowledge (spatial trophic) requirements representing effective support fitting management actions conservation planning.

Brown hares originated in the open steppe grasslands of Eurasia and have adapted very successfully to a mixed, arable agriculture environment. In last decades 20th century, decline brown hare populations has been observed many European countries. this study, we documented long-term (1965–2018) population field forest mosaic central Poland (from over 30 ind./100 ha mid-1960s 1–2 past decade). We showed that recent autumn densities were same as compared preceding spring (suggesting low recruitment rate) recorded fields no longer higher than forests (probably due decrease habitat quality lands). also share red fox diet was now (0.1% vs. 13% past). (2004–2018) estimates another area located 70 km east (with similar structure, community predators climate conditions, but with less intense agriculture), where increasing. suggested farming practices most important factor for our study area.

Quadrat method used assess plant frequency, whereas composition determined by fecal micro-histological analysis. A total 143 species were identified site 109 them found feces Capreolus capreolus italicus. All over year, most taxa ingested low percentages (≤5%) utilized Quercus suber, Prunus spinosa, Rubia peregrina, Crateaegus monogyna. Fagaceae Rosaceae families represented bulk positively selected. In addition, positive selection Fabaceae Oleaceae wet season but not dry one. both periods deer showed for deciduous woody plants evergreen plants, instead avoided wild forbs graminoids. Our results confirmed that this subspecies behaved as generalist highly selective feeder.

The present study was designed to assess the impact of hen grazing on plant biodiversity in ground cover hazelnut orchards, as well quality eggs from hens orchards. Two different sites orchards located Basilicata region were selected conduct this study. results showed that affected composition herbaceous stratum By using quadrat method, a total 99 (46 site A and 53 B) species identified at beginning trial. After grazing, number plants dropped 72 (30 42 B). Amongst most consumed we found Lolium sp., Trifolium Polygonum Cichorium intybus, Cynodon dactylon. Alpha diversity analysis (species richness, evenness) beta (Morisita-Horn Sørensen indices) confirmed played role controlling vegetation growth. Concerning egg quality, chemical parameters differed significantly when comparing with those control group, indicating influenced by food resources available each site.
