The construction of underground reservoirs in coal goaf is a new technology aimed to realize the sustainable development mining-water storage-surface ecology arid areas northwest China. key feasibility this that mining cannot affect near-surface aquifer, and amount water entering reservoir must meet needs mine. Taking Buertai Coal Mine, one largest mines world, as an example, article used similar simulation, numerical simulation in-situ test methods study height water-conducting fracture zone overlying strata inflow reservoirs. results show that, under repeated 22- 42-coal seams, maximum 178 m, distance between aquifer 42 about 240 so has little effect on aquifer. During period 22-coal seam, groundwater Zhidan Zhiluo Formations was mainly discharged vertically, while Yanan Formation horizontal flow during mining. In way, total Mine reaches 500 m3/h, which not only meets mine, but also, rest can irrigate 98 hectares farmland nearby. Underground could achieve mining, storage surface semi-arid areas.

Abstract The Kuye River Basin has experienced a rapid depletion of groundwater due to the increased coal production. In this study, by introducing empirical equations derived from three zone theory in mining industry China as boundary condition, calculation model was developed coupling soil and water assessment tool visual modular three‐dimensional finite‐difference ground‐water flow (SWAT‐VISUAL MODFLOW). applied several mines basin quantify impact underground mining. For illustration purposes, two observation stations one level station were selected for change simulation 2009, producing results that agreed well with observed data. We found closely related height fractured water‐conducting caused mining, higher led lower level. This finding further supported responsible 23.20 mm aquifer breakages 2009. Thus, preventing surface subsidence can help protecting basin's groundwater.
