Abstract The urgency for remote, reliable, and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on climate ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), but there been no comprehensive overview of its coverage across realms. We present metadata from 358 datasets recorded since 1991 above land water constituting the first global synthesis sampling spatial, temporal, ecological scales. compiled summary statistics (sampling locations, deployment schedules, focal taxa, recording parameters) used eleven case studies to assess trends biological, anthropogenic, geophysical sounds. Terrestrial is spatially denser (42 sites/M·km 2 ) than aquatic (0.2 1.3 oceans freshwater) with only one subterranean dataset. Although diel lunar cycles are well-covered all realms, marine (65%) comprehensively sample seasons. Across biological sounds show contrasting activity, while declining distance equator anthropogenic activity. PAM can thus inform phenology, macroecology, conservation studies, representation be improved by widening terrestrial taxonomic breadth, expanding high seas, increasing spatio-temporal replication freshwater habitats. Overall, shows considerable promise support efforts.

Computational ecoacoustics has seen significant growth in recent decades, facilitated by the reduced costs of digital sound recording devices and data storage. This progress enabled continuous monitoring vocal fauna through Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), a technique used to record analyse environmental sounds study animal behaviours their habitats. While collection ecoacoustic become more accessible, effective analysis this information understand monitor populations remains major challenge. survey paper presents state-of-the-art approaches, with focus on applicability large-scale PAM. We emphasise importance PAM, as it enables extensive geographical coverage monitoring, crucial for comprehensive biodiversity assessment understanding ecological dynamics over wide areas diverse approach is particularly vital face rapid changes, provides insights into effects these changes broad array species ecosystems. As such, we outline most challenging tasks, including pre-processing, visualisation, labelling, detection, classification. The concept of soundscape was originally coined to study the relationship between humans and their sonic environment. Since then, several definitions soundscapes have been proposed based on musical, acoustical ecological perspectives. However, causal mechanisms that underlie often overlooked. As a consequence, term “soundscape” is frequently used in an ambiguous way, alternatively pointing objective realities or subjective percepts. Through interdisciplinary review, we identified main biotic abiotic factors condition non-anthropogenic terrestrial soundscapes. A source-filter approach describe sound sources, propagation phenomena receiver’s characteristics. Interdisciplinary information cross-referenced order define relationships factors, sources filters. Those associated references were organized into functional block diagram. This representation question different uses meanings found literature. Three separate categories then suggested: distal soundscape, proximal perceptual soundscape. Finally, practical examples these described, relation new systemic should help ecoacousticians, bioacousticians, psychoacousticians environmental managers better understand protect natural areas more significant way.

Invasive alien species (IAS) are a threat to biodiversity and ecosystem function worldwide. Unfortunately, researchers, agencies, other management groups face the unresolved challenge of effectively detecting monitoring IAS at large spatial temporal scales. To improve detection soniferous IAS, we introduced pipeline for large-scale passive acoustic (PAM). Our main goal was illustrate how PAM can be used rapidly provide baseline information on IAS. that aim, collected data across Puerto Rico from March June 2021 single-species occupancy models investigate distribution in archipelago assess peak vocal activity.
