The global phosphorus crisis provided impetus to develop fertilizers with better P use efficiency. We tested layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as slow release superior performance fertilize strongly P-fixing soils. Mg–Al LDHs varying M2+/M3+ ratios were synthesized NO3– forms and exchanged HPO42–. XRD XANES spectroscopy confirmed the identity of phosphate-exchanged LDH. Decreasing ratio, i.e., increasing anion exchange capacity, increased selectivity adsorption due charge density LDH layers. fertilization efficiency (Mg/Al ratio 2) was compared that a soluble fertilizer in two P-deficient soils, an acid weathered soil calcareous soil. P-LDH up 4.5 times higher than P. This likely related liming effect In soil, at low doses only 20% above P, whereas it lower high doses. These overall encouraging results warrant further studies on boundary conditions under which P-LDHs may outperform traditional fertilizers.
