The wide variety of perspectives and actions individual anglers contribute greatly to success or failure when adopting implementing fisheries management tools. Catch-and-release (C&R) is one such tool where influenced by both variation in human factors, but also species fishery specific characteristics. In this study, an intercept survey 94 sea trout a C&R dominated on the Swedish island Gotland investigated motivations release retain catches, self-assessment anglers' own ability fish, their rating importance various factors influencing successful outcomes C&R. Retention catches was most strongly motivated situations deemed fish unlikely survive, however more than half acknowledged being unaware delayed mortality released fish. spawning status primary motivation for release, particularly among that prefer keep at least some catches. roles water temperature, using single, barbless hooks were scored as significantly less important other components contributing release. Anglers gave favourable greater reported higher catch per unit effort, proportion These findings are discussed context bridging knowledge behavioural gaps around best practices fishery.

Abstract Artificial reefs have been widely deployed with the intention of increasing fish habitat, enhancing recreational fishery opportunities and providing socio‐economic benefits to surrounding communities. Substantial work has done understand ecology artificial but efficacy as a management tool hinges on socioecological feedbacks that are not well understood. Socioecological difficult discern because they depend multiple complex interactions between fish, fishers, managers habitats. To better net effects fisheries, we conducted literature review catalogue reefs. Our global synthesis revealed may result in negative effect populations, at least short‐term, catch‐driven bolstering objectives occur more often or greater intensities than positive biological effects. We highlighted important need be accounted for when considering their deployment management. There unintended consequences if from habitat‐to‐fish fish‐to‐fish outweighed by population losses due fish‐to‐fisher feedbacks. Taken concert semi‐permanent nature apparent popularity stakeholders, view emerges possibly functioning ‘social‐ecological trap’. This emphasizes robust assessments reefs, formal decision science approaches implementing these structures.

The incorporation of theories and methods from tourism research in recreational fisheries is not common practice, despite many parallels between the two fields. Adopting a perspective could contribute to our understanding angling tourists' attitudes preferences help identify factors affecting recruitment retention anglers. concept destination loyalty reflects tourist's intention revisit or recommend destination, provides suitable avenue for studying (repeated) visits fishing destination. This study assessed tourists targeting Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) sea trout trutta at Mörrum river southern Sweden. A structural equation model validated positive relationships psychological dimensions image, satisfaction, place attachment loyalty. In addition, centrality activity anglers' life was identified as precursor subsequent Moreover, anglers with high experience use history scored higher than other on several indicators These results show how applying traditional may explain angler fishery, which ultimately contributes management visitor numbers experiences. measurement used this can inform future studies involving creating universal scale construct its antecedents. Abstract Marine recreational fisheries often lack necessary information to perform assessments and develop sustainable management strategies. In Chile, although reef‐fish have been signaled as overexploited, there are still no commercial or regulations regarding bans, catch limits, size limits. We implemented an expert elicitation protocol propose measures regulate harvests of 17 species. Sixteen experts estimated minimum legal sizes, temporal closures, maximum number individuals harvested per person trip (known “bag limits”). Experts also prioritized for each Maximum varied between 1 7. addition, permanent bans were recommended some species, such acha ( Medialuna ancietae ), pejeperro Semicossyphus darwini San Pedro Oplegnathus insignis ). concluded that gathered through can play a key role inform data‐poor fishery management. Expert protocols include iterative process, based on individual estimates open discussion phase, provide the enabling environment identify variety measures. While future challenges development mechanisms promote acceptability compliance management, approach presented here is important initiate much needed discussions.

Abstract The Gulf of Mexico red snapper fishery has been caught in a spiral more restrictive regulations and disputed management. Current management measures have failed to reduce fishing mortality, owing part derby style fishing. A harvest tag system could potentially better limit mortality without decreasing seasons. In 2019/20 we surveyed 766 recreational anglers who fish Florida with private boats ascertain their preferences for regulation changes, how they would alter effort if was implemented. Respondents were heterogeneous terms tags versus current approaches, most respondents preferring maintain under the existing approach bag, size, season limits. preferred indicated that might increase or decrease effort. Our findings suggest stringent using approaches will not secure angler satisfaction pressure on stock. Harvest tags, though by all respondents, may allow regulators manage number rebuild stock, although implementing this program pose some challenges.

Abstract Despite extensive research on the importance and impacts of recreational fisheries, there is a shortage information regulatory compliance in sector. While fishing has economic social benefits, risks to ecosystem health resource sharing are exacerbated by non-compliance with regulations. This manuscript explores methodologies employed for assessing fisheries provide recommendations best practices understanding non-compliance. Using EBSCOhost database searches keywords pertaining compliance, total 558 studies were reviewed. Of these, only 49 specifically examined fisheries. A broad range methods have been used assess including surveys, observations, law enforcement records analysis, netnography, self-reporting, modelling, forensic investigations. these methods, although costly, suitable estimating various facets most detailed data. other such as records, netnography indirect observation, more cost-effective, they limited detecting presence some types should be initially determine if may exist fishery. Understanding dynamics essential formulating effective management strategies, which aim mitigate adverse ecosystems while maximising its socio-economic advantages. It advisable individuals interested comprehending within specific fishery first employ capable ascertaining existence Subsequently, implement gather extent underlying factors contributing non-compliance, through surveys utilising questioning techniques. Abstract Objective In 2017, we began a 5‐year mark–recapture study to estimate apparent survival of Walleye Sander vitreus and angler exploitation in Lake Sharpe, South Dakota, inform management strategies for this fishery. The revealed substantial downstream emigration Walleye; therefore, also examined the influence on mortality. Methods We estimated using Seber parameterization dead recovery model. our models, included factors influencing voluntary fish release, as well harvest restrictions, tagging location, year. used multistate Markov model relation total length, sex, annual reservoir discharge. estimates informed interpretations survival. Result Apparent patterns were explained by an interaction between length minimum restriction. was lower during July August, when limit suspended, results suggest that anglers willing release preferred sizes (≥508 mm) able smaller (<381 Walleye. Annual survival, exploitation, ranged 15% 47%, 8% 25%, 11% 28%, respectively. Emigration influenced location discharge: increasing with proximity Big Bend dam high flows. Although years or corresponded low did not explain magnitude mortality indicated models. Conclusion Our harvest–release decisions Sharpe are primarily regulations, although significant source indicate emigration. Continued investigations into immigration sources warranted better
