The evolution of SDG-related third sector and public administration literature: an analysis and call for more SDG-related research

The
seventeen
Sustainable
Development
Goals
(SDGs)
were
adopted
in
2015
and
achieving
them
by
2030
is
crucial
for
human
development.
However,
progress
on
the
goals
currently
remains
short
of
requirements.
As
third
public
sectors
play
a
role
goals,
this
study
analyzes
how
SDG-related
sector
administration
literature
has
evolved
over
last
thirty
years.
I
use
state-of-the-art
method
to
map
articles
SDGs.
In
contrast
previous
studies
that
have
found
an
increase
publications
directly
mention
SDGs,
find
decline
proportion
relate
SDGs
without
necessarily
mentioning
directly.
also
analyze
SDG-relatedness
article
corresponds
its
citation
count.
While
mixed
results
across
data
sources,
relationship
between
count
significantly
more
positive
work
published
after
adoption
association
now
2015,
it
still
negative
literature.

Research
is
critical
in
tackling
the
sustainable
development
goals
(SDGs)
particularly
knowledge
economy
context,
offering
evidence-based
solutions,
monitoring
advancements,
and
pinpointing
hurdles.
While
scholars
globally
have
extensively
studied
SDGs,
there
a
notable
gap
understanding
SDG-related
research
non-Global
North
contexts.
This
paper
addresses
this
by
examining
trajectory
current
landscape
of
scholarly
addressing
SDGs
Kazakhstan.
A
total
7092
Scopus-indexed
Kazakhstani
publications
relevant
to
from
2015
2023
were
identified
using
machine
learning–based
automated
detection
method
investigate
evolving
over
time
predominant
garnering
most
interest,
analyze
characteristics
production
related
development,
interconnectedness
between
published
works.
Kazakhstan's
engagement
with
reflects
its
commitment
economy,
especially
research,
results
show
that
relative
growth
Kazakhstan
has
declined
10%
last
seven
years.
Moreover,
exhibit
statistically
lower
rate
international
collaboration,
are
less
available
open
access,
receive
funding
than
not
SDGs.
The
study
highlights
significant
variation
attention
given
different
SDGs:
7,
8,
10,
3,
4
received
attention,
while
least
was
directed
toward
1,
5,
14,
17.
Our
analysis
also
revealed
multiple
synergies
certain
thematically
aligned
within
context
findings
discussed,
implications
for
achievement
beyond
presented.
