ABSTRACT Homeobox transcription factor Engrailed1 (En1) is expressed in the ectoderm and mediates establishment of retinotectal topography, but its role eye‐specific retinogeniculate segregation visual function remains unclear. Parvalbumin (PV) neurons, which are widely distributed pathway, play a crucial development function. In this study, we conditionally knocked out En1 gene PV neurons found an expansion ipsilateral eye projection, while no significant effects were observed contralateral projection. Additionally, decrease number PV‐Cre:En1 fl/fl mice, accompanied by increased level cleaved caspase‐3 neurons. Furthermore, genetic ablation retina through intraocular AAV‐DIO‐Caspase3 injection PV‐Cre mice was sufficient to disrupt segregation. Finally, that exhibited enhanced depth perception cliff test. These results demonstrate participates cell survival regulates binocular vision.

Intentional tactical deception, the employment of a tactic to intentionally deceive another animal, is complex behaviour based on higher-order cognition, that has rarely been documented outside primates and corvids. New laboratory-to-field assays, however, provide opportunity investigate such among free-living mice. In present study, we placed laboratory-style test chambers with single entrance near forest Warsaw, where observed social interactions two territorial murids, black-striped yellow-necked mice, under food competition for seven months. Notably, interactions, video-recorded 21 instances deceptive pursuer evasion. most obvious cases, an individual inside chamber, avoid incoming mouse, hid by chamber opening (the only means enter or exit), paused until entered passed by, then exploited distraction back-turned fleeing through in direction opposite one came from. This dodging first evidence suggestive intentional deception As such, this may be interest not rodent psychology but also, more generally, fields non-human intentionality theory mind.

The superior colliculus is a critical brain region involved in processing visual information. It receives input directly from the retina, as well via projection primary cortex. Here we determine which cell types superficial receive cortex mice. Neurons layers of were classified into four groups - Wide-field, narrow-field, horizontal and stellate based on their morphological electrophysiological properties. To functional connections between V1 these different expressed Channelrhodopsin2 then optically stimulated axons while recording neurons using whole-cell patch-clamp vitro. We found that all received monosynaptic (direct) V1. Wide-field more likely than other to input. Our results provide information specificity projection, increasing our understanding how processed at single level.

ABSTRACT The nucleus of Darkschewitsch (ND), mainly composed GABAergic neurons, is widely recognized as a component the eye-movement controlling system. However, functional contribution ND neurons (NDGABA) in animal behavior largely unknown. Here, we show that NDGABA were selectively activated by different types fear stimuli, such predator odor and foot shock. Optogenetic chemogenetic manipulations revealed mediate freezing behavior. Moreover, using circuit-based optogenetic neuroanatomical tracing methods, identified an excitatory pathway from lateral periaqueductal gray (lPAG) to induces exciting inhibitory outputs motor-related gigantocellular reticular nucleus, ventral part (GiV). Together, these findings indicate population novel hub for defensive response relaying fearful information lPAG GiV, mechanism critical understanding how encoded mammalian brain.
