Catch me if you can: free-living mice show a highly flexible dodging behaviour suggestive of intentional tactical deception

Intentional
tactical
deception,
the
employment
of
a
tactic
to
intentionally
deceive
another
animal,
is
complex
behaviour
based
on
higher-order
cognition,
that
has
rarely
been
documented
outside
primates
and
corvids.
New
laboratory-to-field
assays,
however,
provide
opportunity
investigate
such
among
free-living
mice.
In
present
study,
we
placed
laboratory-style
test
chambers
with
single
entrance
near
forest
Warsaw,
where
observed
social
interactions
two
territorial
murids,
black-striped
yellow-necked
mice,
under
food
competition
for
seven
months.
Notably,
interactions,
video-recorded
21
instances
deceptive
pursuer
evasion.
most
obvious
cases,
an
individual
inside
chamber,
avoid
incoming
mouse,
hid
by
chamber
opening
(the
only
means
enter
or
exit),
paused
until
entered
passed
by,
then
exploited
distraction
back-turned
fleeing
through
in
direction
opposite
one
came
from.
This
dodging
first
evidence
suggestive
intentional
deception
As
such,
this
may
be
interest
not
rodent
psychology
but
also,
more
generally,
fields
non-human
intentionality
theory
mind.

The
superior
colliculus
is
a
critical
brain
region
involved
in
processing
visual
information.
It
receives
input
directly
from
the
retina,
as
well
via
projection
primary
cortex.
Here
we
determine
which
cell
types
superficial
receive
cortex
mice.
Neurons
layers
of
were
classified
into
four
groups
-
Wide-field,
narrow-field,
horizontal
and
stellate
based
on
their
morphological
electrophysiological
properties.
To
functional
connections
between
V1
these
different
expressed
Channelrhodopsin2
then
optically
stimulated
axons
while
recording
neurons
using
whole-cell
patch-clamp
vitro.
We
found
that
all
received
monosynaptic
(direct)
V1.
Wide-field
more
likely
than
other
to
input.
Our
results
provide
information
specificity
projection,
increasing
our
understanding
how
processed

ABSTRACT
The
nucleus
of
Darkschewitsch
(ND),
mainly
composed
GABAergic
neurons,
is
widely
recognized
as
a
component
the
eye-movement
controlling
system.
However,
functional
contribution
ND
neurons
(NDGABA)
in
animal
behavior
largely
unknown.
Here,
we
show
that
NDGABA
were
selectively
activated
by
different
types
fear
stimuli,
such
predator
odor
and
foot
shock.
Optogenetic
chemogenetic
manipulations
revealed
mediate
freezing
behavior.
Moreover,
using
circuit-based
optogenetic
neuroanatomical
tracing
methods,
identified
an
excitatory
pathway
from
lateral
periaqueductal
gray
(lPAG)
to
induces
exciting
inhibitory
outputs
motor-related
gigantocellular
reticular
nucleus,
ventral
part
(GiV).
Together,
these
findings
indicate
population
novel
hub
for
defensive
response
relaying
fearful
information
lPAG
GiV,
mechanism
critical
understanding
how
encoded
mammalian
brain.

the
ectoderm
and
mediates
establishment
of
retinotectal
topography,
but
its
role
eye‐specific
retinogeniculate
segregation
visual
function
remains
unclear.
Parvalbumin
(PV)
neurons,
which
are
widely
distributed
pathway,
play
a
crucial
development
function.
In
this
study,
we
conditionally
knocked
out
En1
gene
PV
neurons
found
an
expansion
ipsilateral
eye
projection,
while
no
significant
effects
were
observed
contralateral
projection.
Additionally,
decrease
number
PV‐Cre:En1
fl/fl
mice,
accompanied
by
increased
level
cleaved
caspase‐3
neurons.
Furthermore,
genetic
ablation
retina
through
intraocular
AAV‐DIO‐Caspase3
injection
PV‐Cre
mice
was
sufficient
to
disrupt
segregation.
Finally,
that
exhibited
enhanced
depth
perception
cliff
test.
These
results
demonstrate
participates
cell
survival
regulates
binocular
vision.
