Contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) such as pharmaceuticals commonly found in urban and industrial wastewater are a potential threat to human health have negative environmental impact. Most treatment plants cannot efficiently remove these compounds therefore, many end up aquatic ecosystems, inducing problems toxicity antibiotic-resistance. This review reports the extent pharmaceutical removal by individual processes bioreactors, advanced oxidation membrane filtration systems, all which not 100% efficient can lead direct discharge into water bodies. Also, importance understanding biotransformation during biological ultrasound treatment, its impact on efficacy will be reviewed. Different combinations above, either an integrated configuration or series, discussed terms their degradation efficiency scale-up capabilities. The trace quantities issues highlight concentration volume reduction step for wastewater, could subsequently treated ultrasound.

Antibiotic residues in water are general health and environmental risks due to the antibiotic-resistance phenomenon. Sonication has been included among advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) used remove recalcitrant contaminants aquatic environments. Sonochemical have shown substantial advantages, including cleanliness, safety, energy savings either negligible or no secondary pollution. This review provides a wide overview of different protocols degradation mechanisms for antibiotics that use sonication alone hybrid processes, such as with catalysts, Fenton Fenton-like photolysis, ozonation, etc.
