Wastewater management has become crucial as the global population grows. Construction wetlands (CWs) have emerged a promising way to treat wastewater, providing natural and cost-effective alternative. This review aims present state-of-the-art of CWs for sustainable wastewater management. The major parameters affecting constructed are characterized unit parameters, operational meteorological parameters. media vegetation, hydraulic loading rate flow rate. Among this, can be controlled by operators or design engineers whereas in case uncontrollable ones. study examines initially interaction between performance CWs. Then effect are, namely, temperature, wind speed, relative humidity on Furthermore, overall challenges faced critically reviewed, suitable recommendations suggested improve discussed. concludes that maximize CW efficiency, considerations include selecting appropriate (surface flow, subsurface hybrid), determining configuration system (horizontal vertical flow), substrate material, incorporating innovative technologies such solar-powered aeration systems biochar-amended substrates. In future, integrating with other advanced treatment technologies, enhancing plant species microbial consortia, adapting climate variations, developing better monitoring modeling methods.

Abstract Wetland restoration is a popular nutrient management strategy for improving water quality in agricultural catchments. However, wetland’s ability to retain phosphorus highly variable and wetlands can sometimes be source of downstream ecosystems. Here, we used meta-analysis approach explore the sink capacity 139 both total (TP) more bioavailable form, phosphate (PO 4 3− ), at seasonal annual timescales. Median retention efficiency across all studies 32% TP 28% PO , however range extremely broad. We found that are often sinks (84% site-years) (75% site years). The median within (2.0 g·m −2 ·yr −1 ) greater than release by sources (−0.5 ). In contrast, (0.8 similar magnitude released (−0.7 from coincides with higher hydraulic loading rates, lower influent concentration, legacy soil/sediment phosphorus. Phosphate releases were especially common treating municipal wastewater, as well restored constructed flashy, precipitation-driven flow. experimental design may inherently bias our understanding wetland performance conducted mesocosms outperform other types. Analysis monthly data demonstrated significant temporal variability dynamics, switching many times year, but no generalizable trends. Our results highlight value restoring point ways furthering their utility towards simultaneously targeting enhancing measures avoidance.

Water scarcity is one of the global challenges that threatens economic development and imposes constraints on societal growth. In semi-arid expanse West Texas, small communities are struggling with both growing populations decreasing water resources in regional aquifer. This study compares two nature-based methods could solve this problem. The first approach uses ponds wetlands to make natural processes work together treat wastewater community receives. We applied a novel Pond-in-Pond system, which offers advantages compared conventional pond system configurations. unlocks strategic hydrodynamic by introducing deeper anaerobic pit surrounded berms, then outflows into larger pond. second consists an alternative strategy integrates waste stabilization ponds, storage basin, reuse for crop irrigation—a feat not only treats but also enriches soil fertility. Both approaches were analyzed terms potential pollution control. land application had better return investment emphasized importance innovative solutions sustainable management arid regions, offering benefits. conveys clear message: where scarce, innovation can grow; problems big, available; nature’s understood, they be used.

Over the past few decades, there has been a growing concern regarding fate and transport of pharmaceuticals, particularly antibiotics, as emerging contaminants in environment. It proposed that presence antibiotics at concentrations typically found wastewater can impact dynamics bacterial populations facilitate spread antibiotic resistance. The efficiency currently-used treatment technologies eliminating pharmaceuticals is often insufficient, resulting release low these compounds into In this study, we addressed challenges by evaluating how different influent ibuprofen (IBU) influenced laboratory-scale, integrated constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) system seeded with Eichhornia crassipes, terms organic matter removal, electricity generation, change community structure compared to unplanted, sediment MFC (S-MFC) abiotic S-MFC (AS-MFC). We observed addition IBU (5 mg L-1) resulted notable decrease chemical oxygen demand (COD) suggesting high caused partial inhibition for electroactive microbial due its complexity aromaticity. However, CW-MFC could recover from after an acclimation period unplanted S-MFC, even though level was increased up 20 L-1, plants CW-MFCs have beneficial role relieving anode respiration levels IBU; thus, promoting metabolic activity community. Similarly, removal (i.e., 49-62%) much higher SMFC 29-42%), AS-MFC 20-22%) during all experimental phases. addition, our throughput sequencing revealed performance associated increasing relative abundances several groups are closely affiliated fermentation. summary, results show demonstrates suitability effective generation.

Abstract This study proposed a canal diversion surface flow constructed wetland (CWT) to treat the drainage water in Tala Drain Gharbia Governorate where Nile Rosetta Branch is its outfall. The treated will be used for irrigation purposes. treatment system consists of sedimentation pond, CWT with reed plants, and storage pond. Field data on hydraulic, climatic, influent concentrations were collected. first order P-K-C* relaxed tanks was applied design CWT. results indicated that 2400 m 3 /d discharge, BOD pond area 2600 2 (260 long 10 broad) required one-day hydraulic retention 1.0 depth. controlled by winter four parallel CWTs each one 12,480 , loading rate 0.05 m/d, period (HT) 2.76 days. balance indicates minimum maximum losses 14%, respectively, recorded January June operation discharge are 2482 2741m /d, respectively. rates elimination BOD, TN, TP, FC showed 62, 58.4, 43, 99.8%, respectively indicating good quality uses. still far from drinking standards needs purification. green wastewater region similar regions help decision-makers as primary strategic resource management ecological solution meet United Nations' Water Sustainable Development Goals.
