Uncertain chemical mechanisms leading to brown carbon (BrC) formation affect the drivers of radiative effects aerosols in current climate predictions. Herein, aqueous-phase reactions methylglyoxal (MG) and typical reduced nitrogen species (RNSs) are systematically investigated by using combined quantum calculations laboratory experiments. Imines diimines identified from mixtures methylamine (MA) ammonia (AM) with MG, but not dimethylamine (DA) MG mixture under acidic conditions, because deprotonation DA cationic intermediates is hindered amino groups occupied two methyl groups. It leads N-heterocycle (NHC) + MA (MGM) AM (MGA) reaction systems N-containing chain oligomer (MGD) system. Distinct product attributed electrostatic attraction steric hindrance, which regulated RNSs. The light absorption adverse NHCs also strongly related Our finding reveals that BrC mainly contributed RNSs less groups, have more abundant broad sources urban environments.

Secondary brown carbon is an important component of the atmosphere. The contribution secondary atmospheric from reaction methylglyoxal (MG) with ammonium sulfate (AS) has been demonstrated in laboratory. However, mechanism still unclear, especially influenced by other factors, for example, inorganic salt. In this study, effect soluble iron salt on between MG and AS was investigated through chemical analysis methods, including optical molecular probes. results indicate that ferrous may promote MG–AS accelerate formation carbon. Ferrous exhibits a higher catalytic activity than ferric does. Moreover, indicates Fe(II) true catalyst, rate constant 13 times uncatalyzed reaction, while Fe(III) due to its reduction MG. addition, complex aqueous phase identified.

The co-occurrence of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone has emerged as a critical environmental challenge in recent years. individual harmful impacts PM2.5 exposure have been well studied; however, their combined toxicity under co-exposure conditions remains mechanistically undefined. This paper provides an extensive evaluation the current pollution levels, epidemiological investigation, new findings on toxicological mechanisms to ozone. synergistic depends different factors, including physicochemical properties PM2.5, dose duration exposure, specific target organs. Through research, we identified main targets toxic responses summarized mechanisms. Given research priorities, there is urgent need improve scientific regarding with priority given characterizing while updating relevant guidelines standards.

We implemented methodology for deconvoluting determining origins main aerosol impacting typical area northern France. A one-year field campaign was conducted site located between Paris Brussels March 2018 to February 2019. Hourly-based observations inorganic organic precursor gases PM2.5 speciation were collected using on-line instrumentation. annual concentrations 12.2 ± 9.23 μg m−3 explained four extracted through positive matrix factorization analyses: combustion (40.2%), NO3-rich (26.8%), SO4-rich (18%) mixed marine (15%).
