Alcohol misuse is associated with altered punishment and reward processing. Results The connectomics appeared specific, comprising less than 0.12% features. These connectivities featured medial frontal, motor/sensory, cerebellum/brainstem networks processing fronto-parietal, motor/sensory Spatial correlation analyses showed that these were predominantly serotonergic GABAa signaling. Conclusions A distinct pattern predicted adult drinkers. “neural fingerprints” help elucidating impact on brain providing evidence new targets future intervention.

Alcohol use disorder is associated with overvaluation of alcohol relative to other rewards, in part due dynamic increases value response alcohol-related cues. In a neuroeconomic framework, cues increase behavioral economic demand for alcohol, but the neural correlates these cue effects are unknown. This functional magnetic resonance imaging study combined purchase task an exposure 72 heavy drinkers established sensitivity (51 % female; mean age=33.74). Participants reported how many drinks they would consume from $0-$80/drink following neutral and images fixed order. purchased significantly more compared condition, which was also evident indices (i.e., intensity, breakpoint, Omax, elasticity; ps<0.001; ds=0.46–0.92). decisions were activation rostral middle medial frontal gyri, anterior insula, posterior parietal cortex, dorsal striatum, among regions. Activation lower across regions potentially greater automaticity choices presence or attenuation responses These results contribute growing literature using neuroeconomics understand misuse provide foundation future research investigating decision-making environmental triggers.
