Probiotics are typically marketed as foods and dietary supplements, categories for products intended to maintain health in generally healthy populations which, unlike drugs, cannot claim treat or cure disease. This review addresses the existing evidence that probiotics beneficial people. Our approach was perform a descriptive of efficacy can prevent urinary, vaginal, gastrointestinal, respiratory infections, improve risk factors associated with cardiovascular reduce antibiotic use. Other endpoints such mental, dental, immune were not specifically addressed. We concluded there is sufficient safety clinicians consumers consider using specific some indications - use support gut function during tract infections certain However, we did find sufficiently high level unconditional, population-wide recommendations other preventive reviewed Although suggestive benefits probiotics, additional research needed.

Abstract The immunological response to bacterial vaginosis (BV) remains poorly understood and recurrent BV is still a major public health burden especially in the pregnant population. This article reviews potential mechanisms by which BV-associated bacteria suppress circumvent host microbial defence responses, propagate their survival/dominance without overt inflammation. We discuss composition of cervicovaginal mucosal barrier mechanism circumvents defence: degradation immunoglobulin A (IgA); organism Gardnerella vaginalis haemolysin (vaginolysin); diminished IgA against vaginolysin; sialic acid degradation, foraging depletion; inhibition IL-8-induced neutrophilic infiltration; metabolite-induced incapacitation neutrophil monocyte chemotaxis. also highlight tolerance/resistance both antimicrobial molecules mounted biofilms. plausible role acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectins (SIGLECS) was suggested. Sialidase, often produced G. , central immunosuppression, relapse recurrence observed BV, although it supported other hydrolytic enzymes, vaginolysin immunomodulatory metabolites.
