Scientific and political discussions around the role of animal-source foods (ASFs) in healthy environmentally sustainable diets are often polarizing. To bring clarity to this important topic, we critically reviewed evidence on health environmental benefits risks ASFs, focusing primary trade-offs tensions, summarized alternative proteins protein-rich foods. ASFs rich bioavailable nutrients commonly lacking globally can make contributions food nutrition security. Many populations Sub-Saharan Africa South Asia could benefit from increased consumption through improved nutrient intakes reduced undernutrition. Where is high, processed meat should be limited, red saturated fat moderated lower noncommunicable disease risk-this also have cobenefits for sustainability. ASF production generally has a large impact; yet, when produced at appropriate scale accordance with local ecosystems contexts, play an circular diverse agroecosystems that, certain circumstances, help restore biodiversity degraded land mitigate greenhouse gas emissions production. The amount type that will depend context priorities change over time as develop, nutritional concerns evolve, new technologies become more available acceptable. Efforts by governments civil society organizations increase or decrease considered light needs and, importantly, integrally involve stakeholders impacted any changes. Policies, programs, incentives needed ensure best practices production, curb excess where sustainably low.

Meat and meat products are important sources of protein in the human diet. However, their consumption or excessive has been questioned as this related to sustainability health issues. Due this, alternatives conventional consumption, such produced more sustainably alternatives, have considered. The aim present work is gain insight into different countries, motives for barriers well with particular focus on organic alternatives. Information obtained using FAOSTAT data maps constructed SAS software. Results showed that, general, albeit variations between within there a tendency decrease red increase poultry while pork less clear. Thus, inform consumers truthful reliable way order allow them make well-founded decisions regarding products.

The livestock sector has environmental, health, and animal welfare impacts. This UK-based, quantitative study aimed to elucidate consumers' valuation of alternatives conventional meat products. In an online study, 151 eaters 44 non-meat were shown pictures meat, dairy, bakery products, including beef burger, cheese sandwich blueberry muffin. Each product was evaluated with three different labels (e.g., 'conventional', 'plant-based' 'cultured' for burger). Participants rated expected taste pleasantness, fullness, satisfaction, healthiness, disgust willingness-to-pay each product/label combination. results obtained demonstrate that products overall are acceptable both eaters. Although eaters' plant-based be less satisfying, due lower pleasantness fillingness (Cohen's d = 0.14 0.63), they perceived the more healthy (d ≥ 1.18). Cultured by equally or healthy, but disgusting 0.41), than These suggest there is opportunity promote (motivate) acceptance based on their at least partly balance reduced other negative attributes (i.e., barriers).

Interest in alternative protein sources to substitute for animal source protein-rich foods has emerged alongside calls sustainable food systems meet demands as the global population grows towards a projected 9.8 billion people by 2050. Food companies are capitalizing on diet recommendations that encourage consumption of plant-based and have heavily invested new mimic foods, effectively expanding "plant-based foods" category. At same time, globally there two opposing transitions taking place lower-income populations shift from plant higher-income overconsume recommended foods. Using lens, this review article builds existing literature assess extent which meat milk analogs can become part diets across competing identify unresolved knowledge gaps. This articles first examines dairy trends well emergence consumer perceptions. We then draw compare environmental footprints nutrition compositions meats milks against their respective conventional equivalents. find that, while promising benefits substituting with certain analogs, uptake these products is likely stifled based small number they (i.e., ground meat, emulsions, crumbles, fluid milk). Further, do not completely nutrient composition Plant-based may improved compositions, such fat profiles. However, lack comparable micronutrients highly bioavailable Care should be considered inherently fall under "plant- food" category vastly different whole minimally processed intended generalizable. Future assessments consider contexts direct substitution viable standpoint examine both environment impacts important given population.

The health and environmental advantages of plant-predominant diets will likely lead to increasing numbers consumers reducing their reliance on animal products. Consequently, organizations professionals need provide guidance how best make this change. In many developed countries, nearly twice as much protein is derived from versus plant sources. Potential benefits could result consuming a higher share protein. Advice consume equal amounts each source more be embraced than advice eschew all or most However, the currently consumed comes refined grains, which unlikely associated with diets. contrast, legumes ample well other components such fiber, resistant starch, polyphenolics, are collectively thought exert benefits. But despite accolades endorsement by nutrition community, negligible contribution global intake, especially in countries. Furthermore, evidence suggests consumption cooked not substantially increase over next several decades. We argue here that plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) made viable alternative, complement, traditional manner. These products may accepted eaters because they can emulate orosensory properties functionality foods intended replace. PBMAs both transition maintenance facilitate diet it easier maintain. also have distinct advantage being able fortified shortfall nutrients Whether existing similar whole legumes, formulated do so, remains established.
