ABSTRACT Herons (Ardeidae), an important group in wetland ecosystems, have a particularly strong relationship with humans. However, their predation on farmed fish and shrimp aquafarms can lead to economic losses for local farmers. Consequently, notable conflicts arise between farmers herons. Fish adopt various measures deter herons from “stealing” fish; however, there is limited research the behavioral responses of under such pressures human disturbance. Flight initiation distance (FID) manifestation avian anti‐predation behavior serves as indicator birds' tolerance This study investigated potential variations disturbance little egret ( Egretta garzetta ) Chinese pond heron Ardeola bacchus environments (aquafarm environments) non‐aquafarm Hainan Guangdong Provinces, south China, using FID indicator. aquafarm were less tolerant (having longer FIDs) compared environments. The main cause this phenomenon could be harsh deterrents used by humans prevent fish. These increase risk when aquafarms, causing them exhibit Our increases understanding response patterns human–wildlife provides valuable insights more scientific rational management protection Ardeidae species.

ABSTRACT The East Asian–Australasian Flyway (EAAF) is one of the least studied flyways, especially for migratory passerines. A better understanding behaviour birds along EAAF critical to inform conservation efforts and improve evolution behaviour. White‐shouldered starlings ( Sturnia sinensis ) breed in southern China northern Vietnam, with at some populations migrating distinct wintering grounds. Using a combination extrinsic (geolocators) intrinsic markers (stable isotopes), we tested whether presumed resident breeding population Hong Kong or migratory. We discovered that most tagged individuals (7/8) migrated southwest from winter Vietnam/Cambodia up 2013 km their also found evidence an alternative migration pathway, individual northeast overwinter China. Stable isotope analyses feathers revealed northeast‐migrating had different δ 2 H 34 S values than those southeast year (but similar previous year). Based on data alone, second was identified who between years, suggesting this switched grounds two seasons. Together our results confirm migratory, both geolocator stable suggest species might host strategies, switching years.
