This study explores the use of conductive material in scaling up anaerobic digestion for enhanced biogas production. Focusing on Direct Interspecies Electron Transfer (DIET), research employs a syntrophic DIET-able consortium formed by Shewanella oneidensis and Methanosarcina barkerii 3.8-L experiments utilizing reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) as material. In short-term tests with acetate co-culture RVC resulted 86% higher maximum velocity methane production, while long term real feed 13% increased rate was observed: addition 1.77 (S/m)*m2 faster production 2.39 mL/gVS*h compared to 2.08 reference. The experimental conditions inoculum gave benefit terms process reference, considering fate, among dominant taxa at end experiment, outcompeted. Among methanogenesis pathways, an increase hydrogenotrophic has been observed presence Further is needed understand role sulfur compounds Utilization augment yielded interesting results real-scale application. As added carrier, remains unaltered can be readily recuperated reused multiple times.

Aviation plays a crucial role in global economic growth and can be influenced by events like COVID-19 climate change. The aviation sector has significant carbon footprint that correlated with extreme weather conditions, outlining challenges faced airports proposing strategies such as environmental management, advanced fuels, retirement of older aircraft. This review analyzes 107 scientific papers reports to explore the opportunities integrate circular economy (CE) within sector, emphasizing on waste management practices. It highlights sector's initiatives in-cabin reduction, tracking systems, plastic-free flights. Moreover, it covers industry's efforts adopt principles convert (in-cabin end-of-use) into Sustainable Fuels (SAFs). outlines diverse biofuel production methods, including alcohol upgrading, fermentation, gasification-Fischer Tropsch, thermochemical processes. also discusses innovative technologies microbial enzymatic approaches power-to-liquid (PtL). examines policies surrounding sustainable airports, disconnect between sustainability goals rising output accompanying need for more effective research emissions quotas consumption patterns. Additionally, addresses collaboration regarding waste-to-energy (WtE) conversion achieve comprehensive efficient airport strategies. integration CE vicinities is vital mitigate impacts importance utilizing cabin end-of-use valuable resource SAFs production, which continues face several related scalability, technological readiness, viability.

This study analysed the effect of different lignocellulose composition two crop substrates on structure and dynamics bacterial communities during anaerobic digestion (AD) processes for biogas production. To this end, cereal grains grape pomace biomasses were in parallel an experimental AD bench-scale system to define compare their metagenomic profiles time intervals. The community process detected characterised using high-resolution whole shotgun analyses. Statistical evaluation identified 15 strains as specific substrates. Some strains, like Clostridium isatidis, Methanothermobacter wolfeii, Methanobacter sp. MB1 grains, Acetomicrobium hydrogeniformans thermoterrenum pomace, never before reactors. presence bacteria such Petrimonas mucosa, which degrade lipids protein-rich substrates, along with Methanosarcina Peptococcaceae bacterium 1109, tolerate high hydrogen pressures ammonia concentrations, suggests a complex syntrophic lignin-cellulose-enriched finding could help develop new strategies production tailor-made microbial consortium be inoculated from beginning lignocellulosic biomass.

Power scarcity and pollution can be overcome with the use of green energy forms like ethanol, biogas, electricity, hydrogen, etc., especially produced from renewable industrial feedstocks. In hilly areas, pine needles are most abundant biomass that has a low possibility valorization due to high lignin content. On other hand, anaerobic digestion (AD) animal waste biogas yield poor conductivity. This study focuses on simultaneous production electricity through co-digestion cow dung needles. The digester was initially established stabilized in lab ensure continuous supply inoculum throughout experiment. optimization process involved determination an ideal dung-to-water ratio selecting appropriate conductive material enhance generation feedstock. Afterward, both batch experiments were conducted. results revealed addition powdered graphite (5 mM), activated charcoal (15 biochar (25 mM) exhibited maximum voltage 0.71 ± 0.013 V, 0.56 0.49 0.011 V 30th, 25th 20th day AD, respectively. experiment showed 5 mM powder enhanced electron transfer AD generated 0.77 0.014 30th day, indicating increase ~1.5-fold as compared control (0.56 0.019 V). dung, needle, combination 0.76 0.012 21st while only 0.62 0.015 22nd representing 1.3-fold over control. Furthermore, current work used discarded plastic items electrodes spent batteries emphasize management aid attaining sustainable development goals.
