Wastewater treatment plants worldwide are struggling to eliminate phosphorus from effluents, at great cost, current research suggests that world deplete more available reserves by around 2300. Chemical precipitation main process achieving phosphorus-containing mineral suitable reuse as fertilizer, such struvite. This paper reviews status trends production consumption, summarizes technologies, discussing possible integration into processes, according sustainable water-energy-nutrient nexus.
