Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an invalidating chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by joint inflammation and progressive bone damage. Dietary intervention important component in the treatment of RA to mitigate oxidative stress, a major pathogenic driver disease. Alongside traditional sources antioxidants, microalgae-a diverse group photosynthetic prokaryotes eukaryotes-are emerging as anti-inflammatory immunomodulatory food supplements. Several species accumulate therapeutic metabolites-mainly lipids pigments-which interfere pro-inflammatory pathways involved other inflammatory conditions. The advancement clinical uses microalgae requires continuous exploration phytoplankton biodiversity chemodiversity, followed domestication wild strains into reliable producers said metabolites. In addition, tractability microalgal genomes offers unprecedented possibilities establish microbes light-driven biofactories heterologous immunotherapeutics. Here, we review evidence-based mechanisms metabolites provide detailed coverage genetic engineering strategies enhance yields endogenous compounds develop innovative bioproducts.

Tumor cells are characterized by a delicate balance between elevated oxidative stress and enhanced antioxidant capacity. This intricate equilibrium, maintained within threshold known as redox homeostasis, offers unique perspective for cancer treatment modulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels beyond cellular tolerability, thereby disrupting this balance. However, currently used chemotherapy drugs require larger doses to increase ROS the homeostasis threshold, which may cause serious side effects. How disrupt in more effectively remains challenge. In study, we found that sodium selenite docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), polyunsaturated fatty extracted from marine fish, synergistically induced cytotoxic effects colorectal (CRC) cells. Physiological of DHA simultaneously upregulated oxidation range without affecting cell viability. it rendered susceptible reaching upper limit facilitating elevation combining with low selenite, inducing MAPK-mediated paraptosis. study highlights synergistic anticancer DHA, induce paraptosis tumor These findings offer novel strategy targeted less toxic therapies treatment.
