Geobacter grbiciae can grow via coupling oxidation of ethanol to the reduction various forms soluble Fe(III) and poorly crystalline oxide, suggesting that G. act as an electron-donor microbe for forming co-cultures through direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). In this report, potential DIET Methanosarcina barkeri 800, sulfurreducens Δhyb, or Methanospirillum hungatei, electron-acceptor microbes, were examined. Co-cultures Δhyb performed with sole substance fumarate in presence granular activated carbon (GAC), magnetite, polyester felt. The conditions co-culturing M. 800 (or hungatei) same those except was absent different cultivation temperatures used. All anaerobically cultivated. Samples regularly withdrawn from monitor methane, fumarate, succinate gas high-performance liquid chromatography. formed functional GAC magnetite. No co-culture H2/formate-utilizing methanogen hungatei observed. Additionally, H2/formate-un-utilizing without magnetite supplement. These findings indicate between 800/G. is rather than H2/formate, confirming acts microbe. Although syntrophically converted methane DIET, conversion propionate butyrate not expand range microbes donors interaction other DIET. However, metabolism mixed microbial communities a product requires further analysis. This study provides framework finding new microbes.

Biowaste from livestock production is increasing globally because of the intensification farming and inefficient waste management practices. If mismanaged, biowaste can result in environmental problems, including increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Anaerobic digestion (AD) stands as an effective approach for managing biowaste, simultaneously generating biogas energy recovery digestate agronomic application, following principles circular economy. Considered a biowaste-to-energy approach, AD mitigates GHG emissions, facilitates nutrient recovery, reduces dependence on fossil fuels. Despite its acknowledged benefits status mature technology, further research required to identify best route optimising process terms stability performance. This review examines new that explores innovative ways enhance mesophilic continuous-stirred tank reactors, use additives, especially carbon-based ones like biochar. From this perspective, key challenges are exploring insights into future routes implement units at real scale, pursuing goals towards economy model. Finally, opportunities have arisen farmers create synergies across agro-industrial sectors, enabling them minimise their footprint earn additional revenue.
