Simultaneous recovery of energy and carbon from recalcitrant wastewater has attracted ever-growing interest for water management. However, the existing technologies to break down pollutants are mainly chemical intensive. Here, a novel hydrothermal reaction amended with activated (AC) was demonstrated enable an unprecedented 99.5% removal exemplar difficult-to-degrade contaminant, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), wastewater. Meanwhile, easy-separated hydrochar (C6H7.08O0.99) abundance unsaturated aromatic rings produced, exhibiting 118.46% yield high heating value 32.9 MJ/kg, outperforming hydrochar(s) reported date. The retrieved able entirely offset needs this process. Interestingly, AC catalyst can sustain in situ reuse over 125 cycles no evidence irreversible deactivation. adjacent carbonyl groups on were revealed provide active sites dehydrogenation either C–H (1.24 Å) or O–H (1.40 bond PVA, forming hydroxyl highly reactive intermediates (ΔG0 = −11.5 kcal/mol). It further proved that free oxygen headspace extracted H atoms newly formed −4.7 kcal/mol), thus regenerating next catalytic cycles. long-lasting reusability self-sufficient approach offer sustainable route neutrality treatment.

This work reports a straightforward and high-yielding synthesis of alkyl levulinates (ALs), class promising biofuel, renewable solvent, chemical feedstock origin. ALs were prepared by the acid-catalyzed esterification levulinic acid (LA) alcoholysis carbohydrate-derived platforms, such as furfuryl alcohol (FAL) α-angelica lactone (α-AGL). Phosphotungstic (PTA) was chosen solid catalyst for transformation, which heterogenized on humin-derived activated carbon (HAC) superior recyclability. Using HAC support expands scope valorizing humin, complex furanic resin produced inevitably side product (often considered waste) during hydrolysis/dehydration sugars polymeric carbohydrates. Under optimized conditions (150 °C, 7 h, 25 wt.% 20%PTA/HAC-600 catalyst), ethyl levulinate (EL) obtained in an 85% isolated yield starting from FAL. general synthetic protocol, EL 88% 84% yields LA α-AGL, respectively. The successfully recovered reaction mixture recycled five cycles. A marginal loss observed consecutive catalytic cycles due to partial leaching PTA support.
