The use of luminescence in biological systems allows one to diagnose diseases and understand cellular processes. Molecular systems, particularly lanthanide(III) complexes, have emerged as an attractive system for application imaging due their long emission lifetimes, high brightness, possibility controlling the spectroscopic properties at molecular level, tailoring ligand structure that adds sensing therapeutic capabilities. This review aims provide a background lanthanide spectroscopy discuss selected examples from recent literature on luminescent complexes imaging, published period 2016-2020. Finally, challenges future directions are pointing development compounds capable executing multiple functions light regions where tissues cells low absorption will be discussed.

Luminescent biosensing in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) region, which has weak tissue scattering and low autofluorescence, draws extensive attention owing to its deep penetration, good spatial resolution high signal-to-background ratio. As a new generation of NIR-II probes, lanthanide (Ln3+)-containing nanoprobes exhibit several superior properties. With rapid development Ln3+-containing nanoprobes, many significant advances have been accomplished their optical properties tuning surface functional modification for further bioapplications. Rather than being exhaustive, this review aims survey recent design strategies inorganic luminescent by highlighting performance optimization approaches. Moreover, challenges opportunities kind novel are envisioned.

Phototheranostics constitute an emerging cancer treatment wherein the core diagnostic and therapeutic functions are integrated into a single photosensitizer (PS). Achieving full potential of this modality requires being able to tune photosensitizing properties PS in question. Structural modification organic framework represents time-honored strategy for tuning photophysical features given system. Here we report easy-to-implement metal selection approach that allows fine-tuning excited-state energy dissipation phototheranostics as exemplified by set lanthanide (Ln = Gd, Yb, Er) carbazole-containing porphyrinoid complexes. Femto- nanosecond time-resolved spectroscopic studies, conjunction with density functional theory calculations, revealed pathways PSs highly dependent on gap between lowest triplet excited state ligand states coordinated Ln ions. The Yb complex displayed balance deactivation mechanisms made it attractive combined photoacoustic imaging photothermal/photodynamic therapy agent. It was encapsulated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) provide biocompatible construct, YbL@MSN, which displays high photothermal conversion efficiency (η 45%) decent singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ 31%). Mouse model studies YbL@MSN both synergistic photothermal- photodynamic-therapy-based tumor reduction vivo. Our results lead us suggest promising phototheranostics.
