Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) of lignocellulosic biomass has emerged as a leading biorefinery strategy. Herein, we present copper-based catalyst (CuO/C) derived from metal–organic backbone (HKUST-1) with enhanced performance for RCF woody sawdust, which affords high yields propyl and propanol end-chain monomeric phenols (15.5 wt % in softwoods 46.7 hardwoods) via the C–O bond scission. A series conifer β-O-4 models their deuterated analogues revealed that synergistic action CuO/C hydrogen could effectively cleave aryl ether linkages. It was deduced lignin alcoholysis led to partial α-OH etherification β-O-4′ units, promoted breakage Cα-OMe Cβ-O, thus giving phenolic compounds through hydrogenation coniferyl alcohol over catalyst. When both α- γ-OH motifs were meoxylated, para-propyl phenolics obtained scission linkages (Cα-OMe Cβ-O), followed by Cγ-OMe cleavage propenyl ethers phenols. We envision this work may pave way development non-noble catalysts reactivity selectively valorization.
