Abstract Biochar shows significant potential to serve as a globally applicable material remediate water and soil owing the extensive availability of feedstocks conducive physio-chemical surface characteristics. This review aims highlight biochar production technologies, characteristics biochar, latest advancements in immobilizing eliminating heavy metal ions organic pollutants water. Pyrolysis temperature, heat transfer rate, residence time, type feedstock are critical influential parameters. Biochar’s efficacy managing contaminants relies on pore size distribution, groups, ion-exchange capacity. The molecular composition physical architecture may be crucial when practically applied soil. In general, produced at relatively high pyrolysis temperatures can effectively manage via increasing area, hydrophobicity microporosity. generated lower is deemed more suitable for removing polar inorganic through oxygen-containing functional precipitation electrostatic attraction. also presents existing obstacles future research direction related biochar-based materials effluents Graphical

Heteroatom-doped carbon dot (CD)-reinforced flexible, antioxidant, and UV-resistant polymeric thin films have been fabricated by a facile physical compounding strategy associated with the 'cast peel' technique. The prepared CDs were found to be stable in aqueous media because of their zeta potential value (−5.85 mV). There was no significant change values during 7 days storage, indicating long-term stability CPCDs. CD-reinforced thermoplastic starch (TPS)/κ-carrageenan hybrid developed as antioxidants improve shelf-life agro-products. Besides this, they also qualified for mechanical strength (>40 MPa), transparency (∼77%), nondeteriorative dimensional integrity at high relative humidity (∼97%), properties. For assessing food preservation behavior, leaching has studied time-dependent sustained release different simulant media, where it showed gradual alteration entrapment efficacy high-polarity gradient environments. mechanism CD obtained from non-Fickian fittings initial preplateaued kinetic data. Surprisingly, when these nanodots arrested inside polymer matrix, film excellent water vapor impermeability, low moisture retention, sufficient toughness, superficial compliance external flexing stretching. Also, CD-based TPS/κ-carrageenan exhibited strong antioxidant activity, determined 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (>85%) 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid assays (>90%). Thus, could promoted ideal alternatives packaging thin, tough, moisture-impermeable
