Microplastic (MP) contamination in freshwater systems is a prevalent and persistent environmental issue, yet their occurrence distribution remain poorly constrained. The present study examines the MPs abundance sediment water samples factors controlling Manasbal Lake, north-western (NW) Himalaya. Additionally, investigates relationship between heavy metals of sediment, as well potential interactions. counts lake surface varied from 840 nkg−1 to 4020 13 nL−1 89 nL−1, respectively. Lake exhibited spatial heterogeneity, with greatest observed eastern northeastern areas near inlets. Grain size land use appear collectively modulate variability sediments. Five main types were identified: beads/pellets, fragments, fibres, foams, films, beads being predominant type. Polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene are dominant constituents MPs, domestic sewage suggested source for lake. Furthermore, factor indicated high level lead sediments, while copper cobalt showed moderate inlet. SEM-EDS analysis illustrated presence toxic elements such Hg, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, Ni, Cu MPs. This expands baseline characterization enhances our understanding sources influencing MP distribution.

Microplastic contamination in terrestrial environments has risen significantly, far exceeding levels marine environments. This shift underscores the concerning prevalence of microplastics (MPs) sewage sludge and soil, raising environmental apprehensions. Microplastics from various sources accumulate systems, consequently, soil have transformed into primary reservoirs microplastic pollutants, capable infiltrating aquatic ecosystems. While using to enrich provides nutrients, it simultaneously introduces substantial content, posing hazards. These can altering its properties potentially polluting deeper layers groundwater, compounding risks. review scrutinizes abundance, types, shapes evaluating their impacts suggesting future research directions. Statistical analysis reveals higher concentrations (271 Particles/kg dry weight) than (34.6 Particles/kg). Strong correlations between (R2 = 0.95) underscore significant influence application on The p-value 0.0001 indicates a correlation MP amounts sludge, while 0.47 suggests no association wastewater sludge. Research confirms that properties, microbial communities, characteristics, contingent attributes conditions. Predominantly, found are fibers fragments, often linked agricultural fertilizer use. detrimentally affect bulk density aggregate stability, impairing structure surface. Furthermore, presence alters pollutant transport behavior emphasizing imperative investigate microplastics’ effects mechanisms for mitigating health
