Abstract Mesozooplankton communities in marine ecosystems are mainly influenced by both anthropogenic pollutants (e.g. nutrients and heavy metals) natural variables temperature, salinity geographic distance). To achieve a deeper understanding of the effects on mesozooplankton communities, we analyzed community structure from 91 stations representing five typical estuarine regions Bohai Sea assessed relative importance using multiple statistical approaches. Cd was identified as leading pollutant for observed variation among regions, followed NH 4 -N COD. Redundancy analysis (RDA) model demonstrated that were largely determined variables, indicator species also varied when responding to different factors. Variance partitioning showed posed significant influences (ANOVA, P < 0.05) structure, but explanatory power overrode variables. These observations highlighted shifts zooplankton structures regions. Our results obtained this study provided new insights into mechanism influence areas.

In this study, the occurrence, distribution, sources, and risk of 29 legacy emerging per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in four kinds environmental matrices Bohai Sea were investigated. The ∑PFAS concentrations range 0.40 ~ 61.4 ng/g dry weight (dw) inflow river sediments, 0.48 dw soil near inflow, 0.37 4.18 sea 13.3 718 ng/L seawater. PFAS with eight carbons accounted for > 62.2% by mass, all samples. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was dominant both mass occurrence. Seawater from Laizhou Bay (south Sea) sediments Liaodong (northeast had highest levels ∑PFAS. sediment-water partition coefficient organic carbon content normalized (log Kd log Koc) calculated using measured to determine their distribution seawater sediments. values Koc increased increasing CF2 units perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) perfluoroalkane sulfonic (PFSAs). Six primary sources identified region, including aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF), metal plating, food packages, fluorine chemical industry, fluoropolymer manufacture, domestic pollution. quotient (RQ) < 1, indicating that organisms at low exposure.

Abstract The Bohai Sea to the west of North Yellow in Northwest Pacific is a semienclosed shallow‐water marginal sea on critical path eutrophication and environmental degradation. To better understand metabolism‐induced summertime dissolved oxygen (DO) decline acidification, eight field surveys were conducted between August 2011 September 2017, investigating seasonal interannual variations DO carbonate system parameters central Sea. historically lowest was recorded at 66 μmol O 2 /kg subsurface waters early 2015. By comparing our data set with literature obtained 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, emergence history hypoxia this shown. Associated shortage, metabolism‐enhanced CO accumulation summer resulted aragonite saturation states close or even less than 1.5, threatening calcifiers potentially severe consequences for valuable shellfish fisheries. Based model results combining aerobic respiration (as indicated by apparent utilization) given wintertime/springtime atmospheric level time, study suggests that combined stresses shortage acidification capable ecosystems could develop within decades.

Stress from mixtures of synthetic chemicals is among the key issues that have significant adverse impacts on marine ecosystems. A robust screening workflow integrating toxicological-based ranking schemes still deficient for comprehensive investigation main constituents in chemical contribute to ecological risks. In this study, presence and compositions a collection priority pollutants were monitored by suspect analysis seawater estuarine water samples semiclosed Bohai Sea. total, 108 organic nine use categories identified. Pesticides, intermediates, plastic additives, per- polyfluoroalkyl substances extensively detected groups. Varied distribution patterns illustrated intuitively distinctive sampling areas hierarchical cluster analysis, which mainly influenced run-off inputs, ocean currents, history. Ecological risks with quantified residue levels first assessed toxicity-weighted concentration scheme, pentachlorophenol was found as contributor investigating areas. By optimization multiple alternative variables (e.g., instrumental response detection frequency), extended all identified plausible under toxicological index framework. Similarity endpoints prioritized could further been screened ToxAlerts. Aromatic amine highlighted most frequently structural alert (SA) genotoxic carcinogenicity mutagenicity. These findings fully demonstrate rationality integrated into profiling contamination characteristics, assessing risk potentials, prioritizing SAs.
