Abstract Activated carbon derived from biomasses with different oxygen‐bearing chemical constituents has been explored as supercapacitor electrode. The rice straw (RS) and eucalyptus wood were selected owing to their contrasting composition of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin contents. activated carbons these are obtained by pyrolysis at 550°C followed thermal activation (700°C) after treatment optimized KOH. specific capacitance RS‐based (ACRS‐700), measured galvanostatic charging‐discharging studies 0.5 A g −1 , is much higher (eg, 365 F ) than that ACEW‐700 (168 ). ACRS‐700 attributable to: (i) significantly surface area (3345 m 2 comprising interconnected micro‐ mesoporous structure; (ii) porosity about 2.0 cm 3 /g; (iii) oxygen‐rich hemicellulose possible charge storage mechanism in discussed. real‐time application demonstrated lighting up red LEDs using ACRS‐700//ACRS‐700 symmetric device, operated aqueous freshly synthesized [Bu 4 N + ][NO − ] ionic liquid electrolytes. maximum energy density (42.7 Wh kg the power (1.9 kW for electrolyte favourable applications.
