Zooplankton community data from 45 dimictic lakes, representing homogenous abiotic conditions, were used to distinguish indicator taxa of near-pristine, reference lakes with low anthropopression. Reference conditions selected based on natural land use in the catchment, lack or human activity, and absence point sources pollution, as well good water quality. According these criteria, six designated references all represent mesotrophic conditions. had a abundance Cyclopoida Rotifera, significantly lower biomass compared non-reference lakes. We have found that species characteristic lake were: Bosmina (Eubosmina) coregoni, Ascomorpha ecaudis, Collotheca pelagica, Gastropus stylifer. The responsible for differences among Keratella tecta, Pompholyx sulcata, saltans, which are considered typical eutrophic waters.

Biological integrity refers to the capacity sustain a healthy ecosystem comprising multiple biological communities within region. Robust assessments of thus require sampling groups. We evaluated ecological health Qingyi River Basin (QRB) using three indexes biotic (IBIs), including those based on phytoplankton (P-IBI), zooplankton (Z-IBI), and benthos (B-IBI), found that QRB system was "good" according P-IBI (75.9 ± 17.9), Z-IBI (74.8 21.8), WQI (92.2 5.3) "moderate" B-IBI (43.8 16.1). The reliability IBIs by exploring relationships between water quality environments from perspectives revealed were spatially positively correlated with WQI, Pearson linear regression (P < 0.01). results redundancy analysis IBIs, their constituent metris physicochemical factors indicate have varying importance in determining scores IBIs. However, lower than 0.01), (both P 0.001). In conclusion, are effective for evaluating river ecosystems could be widely applied. show greater sensitivity detecting environmental damage, most sensitive index.

For the sustainable use of lake ecosystem services—water resources, aquatic habitats for biodiversity conservation, and aesthetic values as waterfront space—ecosystem health assessments using biota are implemented important national environmental monitoring projects. Zooplankton play a key role an linkage in material circulation secondary producers ecosystems. At same time, they influence composition biomass other communities through biological interactions. In this review, we summarize useful zooplankton indices assessment suggest considerations their use. Assessing the biomass of zooplankton compensates for difference between number individuals and accumulated body weight community, which helps assess aquatic ecosystem food web functions. Daphnia are crustaceans that play an intermediate role in biological interactions within webs. The morphology specification differ during growth; hence, it is essential to apply species-specific equations estimate biomass. We evaluated length–weight regression used previously magna conducted analyses using various specifications measurements taken directly devices such as a microbalance microscopic camera. Biomass estimated equation from Environmental Protection Agency was significantly different direct measurement: average lower, indicating possibly underestimated actual D. had higher multiple R2 value when length compared with width area, linear most suitable estimation. Because affected by environmental factors, development accurate estimation will contribute obtaining fundamental data responses changes can be assessed.

The aquatic ecology is essential for human survival. Plankton may be prokaryotic or eukaryotic and unicellular, filamentous, colonial. absorbs CO2, which then produces O2. ecologically important in many water bodies because it forms the basis of various food chains. Phytoplankton has been employed as a feedstock several commercial purposes. also used nutritional supplements, pharmacological substances, digestive enzymes, biomass, polymers, coloring agents, contaminants. It not typical life, such fish, prawns, mollusks, reefs, to consume zooplankton source fresh food. Due its advantageous nutritive values, accessibility, flotation, ease consumption, appealing motility post-larvae, plankton carries significant financial worth. In pollution concern, planktonic organisms, are at bottom ecosystem, reeling from difficult ecological sustainable problems facing ecosystems today, have grown into most demanding environmental concerns overall. We focused recent research on effects variables ecosystems, including temperature, sunlight exposure, penetration, water, pH, wind speed direction, transparency, seasonality, enriched nutrients, pre-predator relationships. contribution biotechnological applications only just identified, but already proven helpful creation alternative healthy foods, natural medicines, cosmetics. An indicator assessment that influences phytoplankton available. These aspects contribute development an appropriate management strategy ecosystems. offers foundation base surveillance ecosystem practices. this book chapter, we discussed role tool.
