The influx of emerging, prescribed, and FDA approved pharmaceutical contaminants (PCs) in the environment is continuously affecting human health cycle (even at trace amount) via contaminating water aquatic life. Among them, non-degradable water-soluble residues which have been integrated with streams groundwater a serious concern now focus United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals 2030. In this direction, removal eradication PCs from wastewater challenging but seems manageable selective detection efficient remediation using nano-enabled functional systems. To explore field well for covering gaps, article an attempt to explain wide variety emerging contaminants, related bio-toxicity, risks, techniques, approaches remediation. With aim environmental management, simultaneously recommended nano-system tuneable properties managed adopting green approaches. Significant efforts are being made achieve 1) very low level (ppb) needed early-stage diagnostics 2) eradicating stimuli-responsive catalysis. both cases, design development electro-active nano-systems desired feature key requirement developing acceptable affordable management strategies. outcomes will encourage scholars develop novel capable targeted produce clean healthy everyone.

This paper sheds light on the alarming issue of antibiotic resistance (ABR) in aquatic environments, exploring its detrimental effects ecosystems and public health. It examines multifaceted role use aquaculture, agricultural runoff, industrial waste fostering development dissemination resistant bacteria. The intricate interplay between various environmental factors, horizontal gene transfer, bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) accelerating spread ABR is comprehensively discussed. Various BEVs carrying genes like blaCTX-M, tetA, floR, sul/I, as well their contribution to dominance multidrug-resistant bacteria, are highlighted. potential both a threat tool combating explored, with promising strategies targeted antimicrobial delivery systems probiotic-derived EVs holding significant promise. underscores urgency understanding environments. By unraveling these unseen weapons, we pave way for developing effective mitigate ABR, advocating multidisciplinary approach that includes stringent regulations, enhanced wastewater treatment, adoption sustainable practices aquaculture.

The focus of this review article was to outline the sources, pathways, effects, occurrence, and spatial distribution most prescribed pharmaceuticals in wastewater receiving waters South Africa. Google Scholar, Web Science, Scopus were used gather data from different regions. A zone-wise classification method determine deficiencies regions This revealed that over 100 pharmaceutical compounds have been reported Africa’s various water sources wastewater, with studies highest concentrations being documented Gauteng Kwa-Zulu Natal. concentration samples ranged ng/L µg/L. Aspirin, ketoprofen, diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen, erythromycin, tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, acetaminophen, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin, carbamazepine, atenolol, pindolol, efavirenz, zidovudine residues among frequently detected bodies wastewaters Based on data, has number (108) waste surface water, Northern Cape having no monitoring evidence. Therefore, precisely ascertain geographical contaminants Africa, recommends further research be carried out track their occurrence aquatic environments WWTP, especially isolated like Limpopo.

The presence of antibiotics in the environmental matrix has raised concerns regarding their risk to aquatic ecosystem and human health. Surface water, such as rivers, plays a pivotal role dispersion transport antibiotic residues. effective monitoring these contaminants requires investigating sources distribution. While numerous studies have been conducted globally comprehend emergence, prevalence, management substances, investigation therapeutic Africa remains notably underrepresented. Consequently, data emerging African environments are scarce, warranting further exploration. This study aims investigate occurrence four specific antibiotics-tetracycline, sulfathiazole, penicillin g, erythromycin-across different seasons Msunduzi River, Eastern South Africa. Three sampling campaigns were during spring, autumn, winter assess river. Analyte extraction from water samples was achieved through solid-phase extraction, quantification performed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. findings reveal notable concentrations river at locations closest wastewater treatment discharge point. Among studied, tetracycline (158.42-1290.43 ng/L) sulfathiazole (112.68-1151.25 most frequently detected compounds across majority sites tributaries Erythromycin less surface effluent but found be algal species within effluents represent significant source contamination river, industrial areas informal settlements identified continuous pollution. Thus, it is imperative implement appropriate protocols mitigate pollution environment.
