Urban water systems in China are facing multiple challenges, including rapid urbanisation, climate change and infrastructure ageing. It is crucial to evaluate their environmental performance from a holistic perspective planning management processes. To the best of our knowledge, there lack nationwide life cycle assessment (LCA) studies on China's urban that cover all system stages. Therefore, this study aims present comprehensive LCA analysis pinpoints hotspots major sources across China. This was conducted based utility databases at province level, covering abstraction treatment, waterwork sludge distribution, sewage collection, stormwater drainage, wastewater treatment treatment. Nine impact categories were calculated analysed. The results reveal inequity impacts provinces, with overall geographically higher east south, lower west north. However, functional unit northern northeastern provinces than other regions. Most dominated by analyses underlying drivers found purchased electricity primary source several impacts. provides understanding systems, offers some insights for decision-making support sustainable management, can also serve as benchmark future scenario explore options reducing impact.
