Abstract Biochar shows significant potential to serve as a globally applicable material remediate water and soil owing the extensive availability of feedstocks conducive physio-chemical surface characteristics. This review aims highlight biochar production technologies, characteristics biochar, latest advancements in immobilizing eliminating heavy metal ions organic pollutants water. Pyrolysis temperature, heat transfer rate, residence time, type feedstock are critical influential parameters. Biochar’s efficacy managing contaminants relies on pore size distribution, groups, ion-exchange capacity. The molecular composition physical architecture may be crucial when practically applied soil. In general, produced at relatively high pyrolysis temperatures can effectively manage via increasing area, hydrophobicity microporosity. generated lower is deemed more suitable for removing polar inorganic through oxygen-containing functional precipitation electrostatic attraction. also presents existing obstacles future research direction related biochar-based materials effluents Graphical

Abstract With social progress and industrial development, heavy metal pollution in water soils environment is becoming more serious. Although biochar a low-cost environmentally friendly adsorbent for ions, its adsorption immobilization efficiency still need to be improved. As an upgraded version of biochar, modified has attracted extensive attention the scientific community. This review summarized recent research on treatment methods pollutants using biochar. The features advantages modification techniques such as physical modification, chemical biological other categories were discussed. mechanism removing metals from soil by was summarized. It found that had better performance after which provided higher surface areas functional groups, enough binding sites combine ions. Biochar very promising candidate environment. Furthermore, some high valent ions could reduced low metals, Cr(VI) reduction Cr(III), form precipitates in-situ sorption-reduction-precipitation strategy. However, it direction efforts develop high-efficiency with low-cost, sorption capacity, photocatalytic performance, no secondary future.

Abstract The fast increase of population results in the quick development industry and agriculture. Large amounts contaminants such as metal ions organic are released into natural environment, posing a risk to human health causing environment ecosystem problems. efficient elimination from aqueous solutions, photocatalytic degradation pollutants or in-situ solidification/immobilization heavy solid phases most suitable strategies decontaminate pollution. Biochar biochar-based composites have attracted multidisciplinary interests especially environmental pollution management because their porous structures, large functional groups, high adsorption capacities photocatalysis performance. In this review, application biochar adsorbents and/or catalysts for different contaminants, adsorption-photodegradation pollutants, adsorption-(photo)reduction summarized, mechanism was discussed advanced spectroscopy analysis DFT calculation detail. doping oxides is main strategy narrow band gap, generation separation photogenerated e − -h + pairs, produce more superoxide radicals (·O 2 ) hydroxyl (·OH), enhance visible light absorption performance, which dominate (photo)reduction valent metals low metals. environmentally friendly materials, promising candidates cleanup. challenge perspective provided end.
