Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to address climate change is a global consensus, and municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) should lead the way in low-carbon sustainable development. However, achieving effluent discharge standards often requires considerable energy chemical consumption during operation, resulting significant carbon footprints. In this study, GHG are systematically accounted for, driving factors of footprint growth China's MWWTPs explored. 2020, total 41.9 million tons (Mt) dioxide equivalent (CO2-eq) were released by sector, with nearly two-thirds being indirect from material usage. The intensity electricity, source, phosphorus removing agent increasingly influence over time. Through statistical inference, benchmarks for electricity established across all under various operational conditions, potential mitigation through more efficient utilization calculated. results suggest that many offer opportunities emission reduction. Consequently, empirical decarbonization measures, including intelligent device control, optimization aeration equipment, recovery initiatives, other enhancements improve efficiency, recommended.
