The current status of multi-mycotoxin contamination in edible and medicinal plants demands urgent development high-throughput analytical methods for mycotoxin detection. In this study, a reliable sensitive method the simultaneous analysis 73 mycotoxins was established successfully applied to detect 260 samples four dual-purpose (lotus seed, coix licorice root, dried tangerine peel). Sample preparation involved optimized QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, Safe) extraction combined with liquid–liquid purification, an enhanced ion pair library reduce matrix interference improve method’s universality. Method validation demonstrated recovery rates ranging from 61.6% 118.6% all compounds, relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 15%. limits detection (LODs) quantification (LOQs) ranged 0.25–12.25 μg/kg 0.5–25 μg/kg, respectively. Based on health risk assessment using Margin Exposure (MOE) Hazard Index (HI) methods, we found that is highly prevalent plants, different components being susceptible invasion by distinct fungal genera. Seed-type showed high susceptibility Aspergillus (53.3%) Fusarium (22.2%) contamination, MOE values 10,000 aflatoxins indicating potential risks. Physical state good storage conditions significantly influenced levels, fragmented showing substantially higher levels. Additionally, associated biosynthetic metabolic pathways were frequently detected simultaneously contaminated samples. these findings, recommend implementing strict moisture control during storage, maintaining intact product form where possible, establishing comprehensive supplier qualification systems. This study provides valuable reference monitoring similar plants.

Mycotoxins, as prevalent contaminants in the food chain, exhibit diverse toxicological effects on both animals and humans. Chronic dietary exposure to mycotoxin-contaminated foods may result bioaccumulation of these toxins, posing substantial public health risks. This review systematically examines contamination patterns mycotoxins across major categories, including cereals related products, animal-derived foods, fruits, medical materials. Furthermore, we critically evaluated two methodological frameworks for assessing mycotoxin risks: (1) models integrating levels consumption data (2) human biomonitoring approaches quantifying biomarkers biological samples. A key contribution lies stratified analysis disparities among population subgroups (adults, teenagers, children, infants). Additionally, summarize current research relationship between associated impacts, with a particular emphasis vulnerable groups such pregnant women infants. By elucidating challenges inherent existing studies, this synthesis provides roadmap advancing risk characterization evidence-based safety interventions.
