AbstractPolyphenols have received considerable attention for their promotive effects on colonic health. However, polyphenols are mostly sensitive to harsh gastrointestinal environments, thus, must be protected. It is necessary design and develop a colon-targeted delivery system improve the stability, colon-targeting bioavailability of polyphenols. This paper mainly introduces research controlled release The physiological features affecting dissolution, absorption polyphenol-loaded systems in colon first discussed. Simultaneously, types carriers with different mechanisms described, assessment models that been studied so far advantages limitations summarized. Based current colon-targeting, outlook reflections proposed, goal inspiring strategic development new therapeutics ensure reach complete bioactivity. Keywords: Colonic targetingpolyphenolscontrolled releaseconstruction principlesdelivery Authors' contributionsYidi Wang: Conceptualization-Equal, Data curation-Equal, Investigation-Equal, Writing – original draft; Zhiying Li: Formal analysis; Yiwen Bao: Investigation-Equal; Huijun Cui: Project administration-Equal; Jiaxin Methodology-Equal; Xingyue Resources-Equal; Mengzhu Baoge Song: Methodology-Equal, Haikun Yi Chen: Resources-Equal, Supervision-Equal; WeiChen: administration-Equal, Shufang Yang: Yiyun Zhufeng Jin: Xu Si: Funding acquisition-Equal, Software, Supervision-Equal, Validation, review & editing; Bin Supervision-Equal.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict interest was reported by author(s).Additional informationFundingThis work supported National Natural Science Foundation China [U21A20273], Central Government-guided local Technology Fund [2023JH6/100500010] Scientific Research Projects Liaoning Province [LSNQN202010].

Abstract The increasing prevalence of health issues, driven by sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets in modern society, has led to a growing demand for natural dietary supplements support overall well‐being. Probiotic have garnered widespread recognition their potential benefits. However, efficacy is often hindered the hostile conditions gastrointestinal tract. To surmount this challenge, biomaterial‐based microencapsulation techniques been extensively employed shield probiotics from harsh environments stomach acid bile salts, facilitating precise delivery colon optimal nutritional effects. With consideration distinctive tract milieu, probiotic systems categorized into pH‐responsive release, enzyme‐responsive redox‐responsive release pressure‐triggered systems. These responsive not only demonstrated improved survival rates stomach, but also successful intestines, enhanced adhesion colonization within gut. Consequently, these contribute effectiveness supplementation intervening with diseases. This review provides comprehensive overview diverse oral tailored targeting intestinal Furthermore, critically examines limitations future prospects approaches. offers valuable guidance effective tract, enhancing as promote © 2024 Society Chemical Industry.
