As global digital transformation accelerates alongside the “dual carbon” goal, understanding how economy can drive green of traditional energy systems is critical to overcoming resource and environmental constraints. This study examines impact attention on Green Total Factor Energy Efficiency (GTFEE) using panel data from 275 Chinese prefecture-level cities between 2011 2022. Three main findings emerged. First, an increase in significantly enhances GTFEE, serving as a key driver improved efficiency. Specifically, one-standard-deviation raises GTFEE by 0.276 standard deviations. Second, this effect operates through two pathways: (1) technology advancements, such higher internet penetration; (2) human capital accumulation, reflected greater college student ratio; (3) innovation, measured rise patents. Third, regional heterogeneity evident, with stronger positive effects eastern coastal cities, while high-carbon-intensity regions exhibit suppressed impact. These results underscore importance public engagement digitalization optimize systems. Policymakers should adopt region-specific strategies, boosting infrastructure low-carbon areas supporting structural reforms high-carbon regions. expands our economy’s role enhancing efficiency offers policy guidance for transition.

Abstract The variability in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings poses challenges for investors companies. Drawing on data from Chinese A-share listed firms (2015–2023), we show that corporate charitable donations (CCD) significantly reduce ESG rating uncertainty (ESGSTD), reinforced by CEO green experience, overseas education, academic background. Robust checks confirm these findings. Corporate reputation media attention are key mechanisms linking CCD to reduced inconsistency. ESG-focused further amplify this effect. Our results underscore the importance of strategic social responsibility activities, attributes, public visibility enhancing consistency.
