Microalgae, a marine-derived natural ingredient, has emerged as rich source of bioactive compounds with the potential to modulate gut–brain axis activities. The objective this study was investigate whether supplementation microalgae extract from Tetradesmus obliquus strain Mi175.B1.a (TOME) influences gut health and reduces stress anxiety in healthy adults experiencing mild moderate gastrointestinal (GI) distress. Methods: Fifty-six (age: 31.9 ± 7.7 years; body weight: 71.8 12.6 kg; BMI: 24.6 2.8 kg/m2) were enrolled randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm clinical trial. Participants randomly allocated receive capsules containing either 250 mg/day TOME or placebo for four weeks. Primary outcomes included assessment GI symptoms using Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) Bristol Stool (BSS). Secondary focused on subjective evaluation mood, stress, anxiety, well blood pressure responses sympathetic nervous system activation induced by cold pressor test (CPT). In addition, stool, plasma, saliva samples collected assess biomarkers associated activation, intestinal permeability, health. 16S rRNA sequencing performed analyze changes microbial populations. Results: Daily weeks safe tolerated population. significantly reduced GSRS global scores (p = 0.02), constipation 0.05) indigestion 0.03) subcomponent compared Placebo. There also significant increase Shannon’s index before FDR correction 0.05; 0.12) stool butyrate level lower group than Placebo after 4 0.039). Both groups showed reduction perceived scores, but intervention had Negative Affect < 0.001). plasma chromogranin A, biomarker, 0.03). no negative effects lipids other parameters related cardiovascular Conclusions: Overall, these results suggest that 4-week T. improves symptoms, potentially through microbiota, may promote positive mental Additional research should follow up populations increased mechanisms underlying improvements This trial registered at clinicaltrials.gov NCT06425094.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common mental associated with significant suffering and disability. Recent evidence has highlighted the role of gut-brain axis in pathogenesis MDD. Enteric glial cells are structurally functionally diverse population that plays key regulating enteric nervous function maintaining intestinal mucosal integrity. These may be implicated origin several digestive extra-digestive disorders, known as neuro-gliopathies (ENG). This paper reviews MDD also belong to category ENG. Animal models suggest environmental adversity can lead dysfunction depressive-like behaviors. Conditions highly comorbid MDD, both extra-intestinal, have been linked alterations. Peripheral blood markers integrity altered patients certain treatments for beneficial effects on functioning. Though much this indirect provisional, it suggests group Further investigation functioning yield valuable insights into pathophysiology treatment disorder.
