This study evaluated the physicochemical, morphological, and functional properties of pectin-based films incorporated with lemon essential oil (EO) to assess their potential as biodegradable food packaging materials. The results showed that EO incorporation significantly influenced film’s characteristics. control film exhibited a smooth surface, while EO-containing had rougher texture globular structures interconnected channels, likely representing dispersed droplets matrix alterations. mechanical analysis revealed increased elongation at break (20.05 ± 0.784%) for EO-incorporated films, indicating improved flexibility, tensile strength Young’s modulus decreased, suggesting reduced stiffness. Film thickness slightly (0.097 0.008 mm) compared (0.089 0.001 mm), though difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Moisture content decreased in (28.894%) (35.236%), enhancing water resistance. Water solubility (16.046 0.003% vs. 15.315 0.040%), swelling rate (0.189 0.003 0.228 0.040; p < 0.05), greater structural stability aqueous environments due hydrophobic nature EO. Transparency tests opacity (0.350 0.02 0.290 0.012), aligning trends UV-protective also moderate antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus Escherichia coli. Antifungal strong inhibition Botrytis cinerea (100%) Alternaria alternata (50%) films. These demonstrate improves pectin antimicrobial activity, environmental stability, making them promising candidates sustainable applications. novel active materials exhibit physical maintaining quality prolonging shelf life.

Intelligent and antimicrobial packaging technologies are transforming meat preservation by enhancing food safety, enabling real-time quality monitoring, extending shelf life. This review critically examines advancements in intelligent systems, including radio frequency identification (RFID), gas sensors, time-temperature indicators (TTIs), colorimetric for continuous freshness assessment. A key focus is natural compound-based chromogenic indicators, which establish visual spoilage detection via distinct color transitions. Concurrently, systems integrating inorganic compounds, organic bioactive agents, antimicrobials effectively inhibit microbial growth. Strategic incorporation of these agents into polymeric matrices enhances supported standardized evaluation protocols regulatory compliance assurance. Future research should prioritize optimizing sensitivity, cost-efficiency, sustainability, alongside developing biodegradable materials to balance safety with reduced environmental impact, advancing sustainable supply chains.
