Abstract The intestines of animals are typically colonized by a complex, relatively stable microbiota that influences health and fitness, but the underlying mechanisms colonization remain poorly understood. As typical animal, fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is associated with consistent set commensal bacterial species, yet reason for this consistency unknown. Here, we use gnotobiotic flies, microscopy, microbial pulse-chase protocols to show niche exists within proventriculus region foregut selectively binds bacteria exquisite strain-level specificity. Primary colonizers saturate exclude secondary same strain, initial Lactobacillus physically remodels favor Acetobacter . Our results provide mechanistic framework understanding establishment stability an intestinal microbiome. One-Sentence Summary A strain-specific inhabits defined spatial gut forms niche.

Abstract The gut is continuously invaded by diverse bacteria from the diet and environment, yet microbiome composition relatively stable over time for host species ranging mammals to insects, suggesting host-specific factors may selectively maintain key of bacteria. To investigate specificity, we used gnotobiotic Drosophila , microbial pulse-chase protocols, microscopy stability different strains in fly gut. We show that a host-constructed physical niche foregut binds with strain-level stabilizing their colonization. Primary colonizers saturate exclude secondary same strain, but initial colonization Lactobacillus physically remodels through production glycan-rich secretion favor unrelated commensals Acetobacter genus. Our results provide mechanistic framework understanding establishment multi-species intestinal microbiome.

Abstract Microbes can be an important source of phenotypic plasticity in insects. Insect physiology, behaviour, and ecology are influenced by individual variation the microbial communities held within insect gut, reproductive organs, bacteriome, other tissues. It is becoming increasingly clear how microbiome for fitness, expansion into novel ecological niches, environments. These investigations have garnered heightened interest recently, yet a comprehensive understanding intraspecific assembly function these insect-associated shape insects still lacking. Most research focuses on core associated with species ignores variation. We argue that among driver evolution, we provide examples showing such influence fitness health insects, invasions, their persistence new environments, responses to global environmental changes.

Managed honey bee (Apis mellifera) populations play a crucial role in supporting pollination of food crops but are facing unsustainable colony losses, largely due to rampant disease spread within agricultural environments. While mounting evidence suggests that select lactobacilli strains (some being natural symbionts bees) can protect against multiple infections, there has been limited validation at the field-level and few methods exist for applying viable microorganisms hive. Here, we compare how two different delivery systems-standard pollen patty infusion novel spray-based formulation-affect supplementation three-strain consortium (LX3). Although the Chinese government has conducted much work in recent years to reduce land-based pollutant discharge, eutrophication continues occur frequently many rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters. This may indicate that sediment is a major source rather than sink for nitrogen (N) phosphorus (P). To clarify endogenous mechanisms of river basins, status, physicochemical properties, bacterial parameters overlying waters sediments catchment (CA), estuarine (EA), offshore (OA) areas Duliujian River Basin Bohai Bay were investigated. The results showed index (EI) CA, EA, OA 62.71, 57.86, 36.51, respectively. EI was more sensitive increases P (slope = 3.887) N 0.734) water, indicating main factor driving basin.
