Cities are at the heart of climate change mitigation as they account for over 70% global carbon emissions. However, cities vary in their energy systems and socioeconomic capacities to transition renewable energy. To address this heterogeneity, study proposes an Energy Transition Index (ETI) specifically designed cities, applies it track progress Chinese cities. The city-level ETI framework is based on national developed by World Economic Forum (WEF) comprises two sub-indexes: System Performance sub-index, which evaluates current status cities' terms transition, Readiness assesses capacity future transition. initial version dataset includes its sub-indexes 282 from 2003 2019, with annual updates planned. spatiotemporal data provided facilitates research into roadmap different can help China achieve goals.
