Purpose The purpose of this paper is to distinguish different types sustainable digital entrepreneurs (SDEs) and explore their approaches toward enhancing organizational resilience. Design/methodology/approach Investigation entrepreneur characteristics using Grounded Theory methodology; 12 semi-structured telephone interviews with (owner-)managers digital-resilient small medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) start-ups in Germany; adaptation a sustainability-digitalization-matrix for initial clustering; investigation reoccurring patterns (within between clusters) through variable-oriented content analysis; application the capability-based conceptualization resilience synthesis extension. Findings First, authors present new typology SDEs, including descriptions four main (Process-Oriented System Thinker, Unconventional Strategist, Dynamic Visionary Success-Oriented Opportunist). The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent increased use of digital tools can be seen as an incentive for small medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to adapt age.
