Mitigating icing hazards is of interest for many technological applications. One solution to employ low ice adhesion coatings, either passively or in combination with active de-icing systems. Nevertheless, comparing different surfaces can be challenging. Studies generally report the average shear stress, calculated as ratio applied force ice-substrate contact area; however, fracture mechanism at interface rarely reported. There are two mechanisms that occur interface: stress-dominated and toughness-dominated. Average stress only meaningful when performing tests a regime; otherwise, stresses underestimated misleading. This study presents new understanding combining experimental numerical methods, demonstrating how traditional reporting method lead errors up 400%. Using simple model, shows regime horizontal push test favored by smaller diameter greater thickness, also affected load position. The identification regimes required correct reproducibility results, enabling better design characterization icephobic coatings materials.

Superhydrophobic surfaces can effectively prevent the freezing of supercooled droplets in technological systems. Droplets on superhydrophobic commonly not only wet top asperities (Cassie State), but also partially penetrate into microstructure due to surface properties, environment, and droplet impact occurring real-world applications. Implications ice nucleation be expected are little explored. It remains elusive how anti-icing designed exploit intermediate wetting phenomena. We utilized engineered micro-/nanostructures, specifically micropillars, modulate fraction microstructure. The behavior with supercooling resulting implications delay when potential sites formed microcavities were investigated using experimental, theoretical, simulation components. temperature-dependent increased at temperatures, partly activated by condensation microcavities. Low adhesion of liquids on solid surfaces can be achieved with protrusions that minimize the contact area between liquid and solid. The wetting state where an air cushion forms under drop is known as Cassie-Baxter state. Icephobicity encompasses a multifaceted definition that necessitates evaluations across various scales, from single droplets to larger ice specimens. The predominant method for evaluating icephobicity performance is adhesion strength (IAS) testing. Multiple geometries and scales testing are proposed. conventional key parameter derived this test analysis the peak detachment force value, which subsequently converted IAS (stress). Recent studies raise questions regarding approach challenge its adequacy comprehensive assessment. To achieve more profound understanding of phenomena involved, study utilizes three distinct benches, all in horizontal shear geometry but under varying conditions. findings indicate values do not necessarily reflect actual behavior. However, versus time evolution (obtained force–time plots) can provide valuable insights into icephobicity, including viscoelastic response coatings underlying failure mechanisms. beneficial aspects additionally validated context investigating coating durability through consecutive (icing/ice detachment) cycles, wherein methodologies, such as wetting morphological parameters, fail capture deterioration.
