Phosphorus (P), one of the essential and indispensable elements for growth living organisms, is finite nonrenewable a multitude applications. Economic P recycling can contribute to sustainable management lessen pressure on imports EU. Several European countries now have paved way establishing recovery legislation successively implemented compulsory from P-rich wastes. This paper provided comprehensive review analyzing potential existing resources engineering technologies in terms their feasibility applicability Europe. Potential flows waste streams eutrophic environments were deeply investigated. Regarding technical principles, application, availability, different approaches release enhancement also reviewed critical manner. Moreover, assessments applications considering economic environmental benefits presented. Wastewater treatment plants show promising efficiency, whereas industrial processes with sludge ashes as input allow up 95% P. Collectively, Europe, efficient has been recognized necessary strategy meet growing demand mineral

Struvite precipitation is a well-known technology to recover and upcycle phosphorus from municipal wastewater as slow-release fertiliser. However, the economic environmental costs of struvite are constrained by using technical-grade reagents magnesium source. This research evaluates feasibility low-grade oxide (LG-MgO) by-product calcination magnesite source precipitate anaerobic digestion supernatants in treatment plants. Three distinct LG-MgOs were used this capture inherent variability by-product. The MgO content varied 42 % 56 %, which governed reactivity Experimental results showed that dosing LG-MgO at P:Mg molar ratio close stoichiometry (i.e. 1:1 1:2) favoured precipitation, whereas higher ratios 1:4, 1:6 1:8) calcium phosphate due concentration pH. At 1:2, percentage precipitated was 53–72 89–97 respectively, depending on reactivity. A final experiment performed examine composition morphology obtained under most favourable conditions, (i) mineral phase with highest peaks intensity (ii) present two different shapes: hopper polyhedral. Overall, has demonstrated an efficient for fits circular economy principles valorising industrial by-product, reducing pressure natural resources, developing more sustainable recovery.

Abstract Bio-based fertilizers (BBFs) have been promoted as a solution to help manage bio-waste problems and improve soil health conditions. Their potential is replace mineral due nonrenewable energy dependency the accumulation that threatens environmental issues. Currently, laboratory field-based literature growing since European Union (EU) looks BBFs future of agriculture bio-based products. Nevertheless, it worth summarizing results on regular basis. The added value this work study opportunities fertilizer utilization sustain plant productivity investigate challenges water footprints human health. This found contamination heavy metals pathogens main implementation which need more attention develop technology process including risk assessments. Furthermore, compared fertilizers, obstacles getting social acceptance transportation production cost, concentration nutrients, matching crops, policy framework. To sum up, BBF long-run scheme should be started tackle global issues potency alternative sources support circular economy paradigm.
