Biochar is a carbon-rich material prepared from the pyrolysis of biomass under various conditions. Recently, biochar drew great attention due to its promising potential in climate change mitigation, soil amendment, and environmental control. Obviously, can be beneficial amendment several ways including preventing nutrients loss leaching, increasing N P mineralization, enabling microbial mediation N2O CO2 emissions. However, there are also conflicting reports on effects, such as water logging weathering induced surface properties that ultimately affects growth fertility. Despite voluminous properties, few studies have systematically addressed effects sequestration carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus soils. Information microbially-mediated transformation carbon (C), nitrogen (N), (P) species environment remains relatively uncertain. A systematic documentation how influences fate transport phosphorus, crucial promoting applications toward sustainability. This report first provides an overview adsorption biochar, particularly systems. Then, biochar-mediated organic species, systems discussed. review process implications environment. Lastly, current knowledge gaps priority research directions for biochar-amended future assessed. focuses literatures published past decade (2009–2021) adsorption, degradation, transport, weathering, C, N, with respect applications.
