Abstract The presence of pharmaceuticals in ecosystems is a major health issue, calling for advanced methods to clean wastewater before effluents reach rivers. Here, we review adsorption remove ibuprofen, with focus on ibuprofen occurrence and toxicity, adsorbents, kinetics, isotherms. Adsorbents include carbon- silica-based materials, metal–organic frameworks, clays, polymers, bioadsorbents. Carbon-based adsorbents allow the highest from 10.8 408 mg/g activated carbon 2.5–1033 biochar. Metal–organic frameworks appear promising due their high surface areas tunable properties morphology. 95% published reports reveal that kinetics follow pseudo-second-order model, indicating predominantly governed by chemical adsorption. 70% disclose Langmuir model describes isotherm, suggesting involves monolayer

Adsorptive removal and dynamic interaction of three different pharmaceutical pollutants, namely rifampicin (RIF), streptomycin (STM), ibuprofen (IBU) onto chitosan were systematically investigated using a batch adsorption technique at processing parameters. The kinetics, intraparticle diffusion, mechanism, thermodynamics evaluated analyzed kinetic models, Boyd mass transfer Weber–Morris diffusion Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin–Radushkevich, Temkin isotherm Gibbs equation. larger molecules, RIF STM, could be explained by Langmuir model, in contrast, that IBU, which is much smaller molecule, followed Freundlich model. maximum capacity RIF, IBU on estimated 66.91 mg g−1, 11.00 24.21 respectively, are higher compared those variety agricultural wastes, suggesting biopolymer potential practical economical adsorbent remove compounds wastewater. mechanism proposed based vibrational spectroscopic analyses, XRD patterns, DSC thermograms before after process.
