Third-party loop operators play an important role in the circular economy (CE) by closing resource loops for other firms. These third-party face a key business model decision: whether to perform CE activities in-house or externally. We adopt activity-based view (ABV) as theoretical lens divide into five activities: collection, sorting, pre-processing, transformation, and integration. By analysing 79 using Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), we found that these are performed two bundles. When collection activity in-house, they likely sorting well. The remaining (pre-processing, integration) also together, either Furthermore, identify some boundary conditions affect why bundles supply concentration is high, tend because access highly concentrated sources can result competitive advantage. uncertainty about waste condition low, develop efficient integration in-house. Activity gaps emerge when no actor market carry out activity. In this case, fill gap carrying internally.

Published: March 17, 2025

Purpose The building industry generates around ten billion tons of construction and demolition waste (CDW) annually worldwide, posing both financial burdens on contractors significant environmental hazards. Embracing a circular economy (CE) approach emerges as promising strategy for sustainably managing the vast volumes CDW. However, sustainable performance many attempts in CDW circulation is still questioned need to be justified. This study transcends traditional reviews by adopting systematic literature review, focusing central question: “What’s contribution 3R principle its sustainability performance?” Design/methodology/approach methodological framework encompasses searching, screening quality assessment, culminating selection 177 articles bibliometric integrative analysis. Comparative assessments were conducted major reduction strategies, reuse materials, recycling rates other strategies. process was also discussed well modern advanced tools used design such information model (BIM), AI geographic systems (GIS). Findings analysis reveals evolution selected publications year, country research hotspots. Through analysis, explored principles adopted circulation, including reduction, recycling, methods across key global economies. There notable disparity volume addressing compared recycling. In comparison economic circulations, social has received less attention. Moreover, ventured into prospective trajectories, exploring future themes adoption “zero-waste” industry, promotion higher-level material circularity, institutional network among stakeholders practice, new holistic Originality/value Few this field have focused circulation. comprehensive not only contributes valuable insights current state within CE paradigm but directs attention toward critical avenues area.

Over the past several years, modularity methodology has drawn a lot of attention in built environment and become key area emphasis for construction sector. By disassembling structure into standardised, prefabricated parts or modules that may be produced off-site then assembled on-site, is technique. In order to identify possible research gaps future studies, this study attempts evaluate studies carried out on technique domain. The also seeks extract information from present SCOPUS database was thoroughly searched papers pertaining using scientometric review. Research articles 2019 2024 were included study, which provided important insights themes developments field methodology. results showed becoming more popular, as seen by large number publications 2019. The uptake of a circular economy (CE) in the building sector is challenging, primarily due to complexity associated with design process and dynamic interaction among architects, engineers, construction (AEC) stakeholders. standard typical methods raise concerns about life cycles. Buildings should not only fulfill current needs, but one also needs consider how they will function future throughout their lifetime. To address these complexities, early planning required guide designers holistically applying systems thinking deliver CE outcomes. This paper outlines critical review implementation buildings, proposed trifecta approaches that significantly contribute development buildings (CBs). findings outline visualized framework conceptual formula integrates strategies simplify enhance AEC stakeholders’ perception circularity sequence buildings. By strategically integrating loop-based value retention (VRP) for X (DFX) strategies, along efficient assessment tools technologies, it becomes feasible embrace during phase. outcome this informs stakeholders systematically integrate dimensions cycle, striking balance between environmental concern, economic value, needs.
