Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) present formidable global environmental challenges with serious risks to human health ecosystem sustainability. Despite their significance, the accurate assessment of MP NP pollution remains hindered by limitations in existing detection technologies, such as low resolution, substantial data volumes, prolonged imaging times. Machine learning (ML) provides a promising pathway overcome these enabling efficient processing complex pattern recognition. This systematic Review aims address gaps examining role ML techniques combined spectroscopy improving characterization NPs. We focused on application key tools detection, categorizing literature into aspects: (1) Developing tailored strategies for constructing models optimize plastic while expanding monitoring capabilities. Emphasis is placed harnessing unique molecular fingerprinting capabilities offered spectroscopy, including both infrared (IR) Raman spectra. (2) Providing an in-depth analysis issues encountered current approaches detection. highlights critical advancing our further, deeper investigation widespread presence By identifying challenges, this valuable insights future direction management public protection.

The quality of water in urban parks is closely related to people's daily lives, but the pollution caused by microplastics park and sediments has not been comprehensively studied. Therefore, eight typical area Changsha, China, were selected, Raman spectroscopy was used explore spatial distributions compositions sediments, analyze their influencing factors, evaluate environmental risks. results showed that abundances surface all ranged from 150 525 n L

Proper waste sorting is crucial for biodegradable plastics (BDPs) recycling, whose global production increasing dynamically. BDPs can be sorted using near-infrared (NIR) sorting, but little research available about the effect of surface contamination on their NIR spectrum, which affects sortability. As are often heavily contaminated with food waste, understanding necessary. This paper reports a study influence artificially induced and from packaging biowaste, residual BDP spectra. In samples, absorption bands (ADs) changed due to presence moisture (1352–1424 nm) fatty acids (1223 nm). real-world biowaste samples were most affected by followed both having altered ADs at 1352–1424 nm (moisture). The waste-contaminated sample spectra closely those clean washed change in intensity ADs. Accordingly, two approaches could sorting: (i) wavelength ranges omitted, or (ii) used optimizing database. Thus, spectra, knowing containing this optimize database improve sorting.

The presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) in consumer products such as electrical and electronic equipment represents a major obstacle for the recycling materials they contain at their end-of-life. Current technologies applied to recover plastics from waste electric (WEEE) struggle meet requirements recyclers regarding restrictions on some these POPs, mainly brominated flame retardant (BFR) content. In this study, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique combined with partial least squares regression (PLSR) was investigated real-time classification WEEE based total bromine (Br) content, order foster reintroduction into market secondary raw materials.
