Understanding the spatiotemporal changes in ecosystem service value (ESV) under urbanization, as well supply–demand relationship between different regions, can provide a consultation for ecological compensation (EC) standards. Taking Suzhou, typical city experiencing rapid urbanization Yangtze River Delta, case study, this paper analyzes land use and ESV from 2000 to 2020. To quantify flow (ESF), we apply breakpoint formula field strength model. Additionally, an EC standard is established, taking population, area GDP into account while specifying compensation. The findings reveal that has led substantial increase built-up accompanied by continuous reductions farmland water bodies. As result, decreased 153.07 billion CNY 138.81 CNY. Furthermore, research identifies spatial pattern where increases with distance center but decreases lake center. This suggests directional of lakes cities. Notably, ESF mainly occurs southwestern central areas closer Taihu Lake greater transfer. transfer ranges 5.11 32.57 There imbalance supply demand services. Therefore, specific county-level cities namely, Kunshan District Industrial Park, emerge contributors should contribute 71.94 80.74 CNY, respectively, other By formulating novel policy provides scientifically informed reference promoting sustainable development.

• We reviewed concepts, methods and applications of studies which have measured ecosystem services flow (ESF). There were multiple definitions ESF resulting in measurement methods. is widely used to measure nature’s contribution people understand the nature–human relationship.
