Abstract The sludge treatment reed bed is a sustainable sewage management technology that offers promising dewatering and stabilisation, due to its low energy labour requirements, minimal operating maintenance costs. Despite numerous existing studies increasing applications of in both developed developing countries, the lack standard system configurations regimes led several operational problems, including clogging poor mineralisation efficiency. Sludge stabilisation STBRs are complex processes governed by system- operation-related factors such as substrate media, macrophytes, loading regime, characteristics, climate conditions. Rather than experimental study, process-based modelling has become approach investigating influence specific on efficiency stabilisation. This paper presents an overview critical parameters beds summary interactions between factors. Then, framework proposed, which provides useful platform study other supports design optimisation beds.

Efficient and sustainable sludge management is a significant environmental health challenge. Sludge treatment reed beds (STRBs; reed: Phragmites australis) are widely recognized as cost-effective, highly efficient, environmentally friendly solution for dewatering. This study investigated the bacterial community composition diversity in pilot-scale STRBs operating at different loading rates (75, 100, 125 kg m2 year-1). 16S rRNA V4 DNA sequencing was used to assess of communities within samples. The relative abundance prokaryotic taxa affected by all treatments. As loads increased, Shannon entropy evenness also increased unplanted beds. Interestingly, presence reeds resulted significantly lower indices than beds, regardless sludge. Additionally, correlation network analysis revealed distinct microbial clusters with responses loads. Principal component evidenced an association between cluster 5 organic matter decomposition, primarily higher doses, while 4 6 were related decomposition doses. associated nutrient removal. formation niches linked stabilization removal influenced both reeds. Future research can leverage these findings innovate pollutant ecosystem services treatment, thus advancing preservation.
